Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigates the link between atherosclerosis and high-risk colorectal adenomas, using noninvasive methods like the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) and ankle-brachial index (ABI) to assess the patients' conditions.
  • - Analyzing data from over 1,160 patients aged 50 and older, researchers found that 10.1% had high-risk adenomas and higher rates of abnormal CAVI and ABI measurements in this group compared to those with no adenomas.
  • - The results suggest that a positive CAVI score and smoking are significantly associated with high-risk adenomas, indicating that CAVI could serve as a useful predictor for identifying these precancerous lesions.

Background And Aim: Current therapeutic strategies for infections (CDI), including oral vancomycin, metronidazole and fecal microbial transplantation, have limited efficacy and treatment failure may occur in as many as one- third of cases. Recent studies have reported that lower concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D are associated with CDI severity and recurrence. However, there have been no studies on microbiota composition after the administration of vitamin D in patients with CDI.

Background: Cholecystoduodenal fistula is a rare complication of cholelithiasis. Symptoms are usually non-specific and often indistinguishable from those of etiologic diseases, but it rarely presents as severe gastrointestinal bleeding. Bleeding associated with cholecystoduodenal fistula usually requires surgery because significant bleeding from the cystic artery is unlikely to be resolved by conservative management or endoscopic hemostasis.

Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) are known as the pacemaker cells of gastrointestinal tract, and it has been reported that acute gastroenteritis induces intestinal dysmotility through antibody to vinculin, a cytoskeletal protein in gut, resulting in small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, so that anti-vinculin antibody can be used as a biomarker for irritable bowel syndrome. This study aimed to determine correlation between serum anti-vinculin antibody and ICC density in human stomach. Gastric specimens from 45 patients with gastric cancer who received gastric surgery at Kangwon National University Hospital from 2013 to 2017 were used.

Article Synopsis
  • The incidence of rectal neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) is rising and they are often found during routine endoscopy, mostly being small and asymptomatic with good prognoses.
  • Current treatment for small rectal NETs without high-risk factors typically involves local resection methods and may include follow-up imaging like CT or MRI.
  • The study highlights a unique case of a small rectal NET that had significant lymph node metastasis despite lacking known risk factors, emphasizing the need for imaging in these cases.
