The past decades have seen breakthroughs in drug discovery that have revolutionized the treatment of many diseases. These paradigm-shifting treatments are often novel targeted therapies, directed at new areas of biology. To better understand these paradigm shifts, we conducted an analysis of the adoption of 25 drug classes from five major therapeutic areas (TAs).

Introduction & Importance: Situs Inversus Abdominalis (SIA) & Paraduodenal Hernias (PDH) are extremely rare causes acute surgical emergencies among adults. We present a case of an adult patient with intestinal obstruction secondary to PDH through the fossa of Landzert with concurrent SIA.

Presentation Of Case: A thirteen-year-old Southeast Asian female with situs inversus abdominalis due to Kartagener syndrome presented with bowel obstruction.

Plastic pollution has quadrupled over the past years and has become a global concern due to its direct impact on life forms. The present study analysed whether the plastic debris in aquatic environments could act as the substratum for the antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria to form biofilm for survival. We have collected various plastic debris (n = 32) from six sites of the Periyar River, the drinking water source for the entire city and one of the most polluted rivers in Kerala (India).

Article Synopsis
  • Normal aging negatively impacts cerebrovascular health, linked to increased risk of ischemic injury, though less is known about the spinal cord compared to the brain.
  • Research using contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in aging Fisher 344 rats showed that older rats had significantly more tortuous anterior spinal arteries and higher vascular resistance, alongside reduced blood volume in spinal tissues.
  • When subjected to low oxygen conditions, younger rats exhibited a substantial increase in blood flow, while aged rats did not respond, possibly due to diminished pericyte coverage and activated microglia in the aged group.

Background This study was conducted to determine the wound-related complications, such as wound dehiscence, delayed post-operative stay, and reinterventions in both groups, and compare the incidence of surgical site infection in elective laparotomy wounds in two groups - those with closing subcutaneous fat tissue and those without. Methods At the Government Medical College, Thrissur, 248 patients undergoing elective abdominal surgeries during the period from August 2019 to August 2020 participated in this one-year prospective cross-sectional study. The institutional ethics committee approved the study, and participants provided written informed consent.

Normal aging is associated with significant deleterious cerebrovascular changes; these have been implicated in disease pathogenesis and increased susceptibility to ischemic injury. While these changes are well documented in the brain, few studies have been conducted in the spinal cord. Here, we utilize specialized contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) imaging to investigate age-related changes in cervical spinal vascular anatomy and hemodynamics in male Fisher 344 rats, a common strain in aging research.

India experienced its sixth Nipah virus (NiV) outbreak in September 2023 in the Kozhikode district of Kerala state. The NiV is primarily transmitted by spillover events from infected bats followed by human-to-human transmission. The clinical specimens were screened using real-time RT-PCR, and positive specimens were further characterized using next-generation sequencing.

Under tropical climate heat stress is a major challenge for livestock production. HSP70.1 is a ubiquitously expressed protein maintaining cellular machinery through proper folding of denatured proteins and prevents cellular apoptosis and protect cell from heat stress.

The rapid emergence of drug resistant pathogens is a major threat which has warranted the development of alternative strategies to combat infectious diseases. In this work, we have tested the anti-virulent activity of Meldrum's acid activated furan (MAF) and 1,3-dimethyl barbituric acid activated furan (BAF) against and . It was found that MAF significantly reduced the violacein production and biofilm formation of at sub-inhibitory concentrations.

Background The spleen is one of the most common solid organs injured in blunt abdominal trauma with significant mortality. The management of splenic injury has significantly changed over the last few decades, ranging from certain splenectomies to non-operative management (NOM). Although several retrospective studies have been published on the NOM of minor spleen injuries, few studies have analyzed the results of NOM for high-grade splenic injuries.

Introduction: There is an ongoing debate about the efficacy and postoperative outcomes of transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) and totally extraperitoneal (TEP) inguinal hernia repair. Our aim is to assess the surgical outcomes of each technique, focusing predominantly on postoperative components to determine if establishing a policy to advocate for a single technique is warranted.

Method: A literary review of randomized control trials and cohort studies to delineate recurrent concerns or points of contention was undertaken.

Background Retroperitoneal sarcomas (RPS) are rare and complex tumors originating from the retroperitoneal space, an anatomical region nestled behind the abdominal cavity and shielded by the posterior abdominal wall. Late clinical presentation is a hallmark of retroperitoneal sarcomas. The symptoms are often nonspecific, and nodal metastases are rare.

The phenomenon of reversible clustering is expected to further nuance HIV immune stealth because virus surfaces can escape interaction with antibodies (Abs) by hiding temporarily within clusters. It is well known that mucin reduces HIV virulence, and the current perspective is that mucin aggregates HIV-1 to reduce infections. Our findings, however, suggest that mucin is dispersing HIV clusters.

Background: Healthcare workers (HCWs) were the most vulnerable group during COVID-19 pandemic and had faced many challenges including high rate of breakthrough infections.

Aims: To study the incidence of reported breakthrough infections among HCWs in Government Medical College, Kozhikode and to compare profile of COVID-19 infection between fully vaccinated and unvaccinated COVID-19 positive HCWs.

Settings And Design: The research was conducted as a prospective study for a duration of 78 weeks from 1 of March 2020 through 31 of August 2021 in Government Medical College, Kozhikode.

Synapses are the cellular substrates of higher-order brain functions, and their dysfunction is an early and primary pathogenic mechanism across several neurological disorders. In particular, Alzheimer's disease (AD) is categorized by prodromal structural and functional synaptic deficits, prior to the advent of classical behavioral and pathological features. Recent research has shown that the development, maintenance, and plasticity of synapses depend on localized protein translation.

Purpose: To compare the axial length (AL) and corneal diameter between glaucomatous eye (GE) and fellow normal eye (NE) in patients with unilateral congenital glaucoma and to obtain a normative database for ocular growth among Indian children below 3 years of age.

Methods: Retrospective longitudinal study. Patients who had a follow-up of 3 years from diagnosis with ocular biometry parameters being recorded at least thrice (once a year) and fellow eye being normal were included.

Background: Older adults with serious mental illness (OASMI) have to manage the twin challenges of old age and mental illness. Understanding their characteristics will help policymakers and researchers plan tailored interventions. The profile of OASMI is not described in any publication from India, and this paper addresses that gap.

Purpose: To find out the mean rate of progression (MROP) of visual fields (VF) in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and ocular hypertension (OHT) using FORUM Glaucoma Workplace.

Methods: Two hundred and one eyes of 105 patients were included in this prospective cohort study. Patients with POAG and OHT were recruited, and VF analysis with 24-2 and or 10-2 was done using SITA standard strategy in Zeiss Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer (HFA).
