Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a multifaceted metabolic and hormonal condition that impacts women in their procreative ages, identified by ovarian dysfunction, hyperandrogenaemia overweight and insulin insensitivity. The piperine, an important alkaloid compound of black pepper has shown promise in modulating various physiological processes. In this work, employed computational docking studies to explore the potential of piperine as a treatment for PCOS.

: Cardiorespiratory fitness positively correlates with longevity and immune health. Regular exercise may provide health benefits by reducing systemic inflammation. In chronic disease conditions, such as chronic heart failure and chronic fatigue syndrome, mechanistic links have been postulated between inflammation, muscle weakness, frailty, catabolic/anabolic imbalance, and aberrant chronic activation of immunity with monocyte upregulation.

The number of cancer survivors is increasing steadily due to an aging population, continuing improvement in early detection, and treatment. Comparative effectiveness studies and clinical trials are being done to assess late effects of treatment and health-related quality of life. This is in addition to long-term follow-up to assess survival.

Background: Dietary supplementation with citrate-containing juices may serve as an effective alternative to potassium citrate therapy for preventing calcium oxalate stone recurrence. This study was performed to evaluate whether consumption of lemon-tomato juice can decrease the tendency for stone formation in the urine of calcium oxalate stone formers.

Materials And Methods: The study was conducted as a prospective interventional randomized crossover clinical trial with a repeated-measures design.

Introduction: Recombinant adeno-associated viruses(rAAVs) are an attractive tool to ensure long-term expression monoclonal antibody(mAb) in the central nervous system(CNS). It is still unclear whether systemic injection or local CNS administration of AAV9 is more beneficial for the exposure of the expressed mAb in the brain. Hence, we compared the biodistribution and transgene expression following AAV9-Trastuzumab administration through different routes.

Background: In a prior report, no patient with rodenticidal hepatotoxicity who met Kochi criteria (MELD score ≥36 or baseline INR ≥6 with hepatic encephalopathy) (PMID: 26310868) for urgent liver transplantation survived with medical management alone. Plasma exchange (PLEX) may improve survival in these patients.

Objectives: We describe our experience with low-volume PLEX (PLEX-LV) in treating rodenticide ingestion induced hepatotoxicity in children.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the knowledge and awareness regarding the use of three-dimensional (3D)-printed appliances used in orthodontics among students pursuing dentistry. The distribution of the questionnaire was done using an online Google Forms link to about 100 dental students. The questionnaire compromised questions that were designed for assessing the various findings and knowledge of update, and finally, questions related to facts on various 3D-printing appliances.

HBV cccDNA is the persistent form of viral genome, which exists in host cell nucleus as an episomal minichromosome decorated with histone and non-histone proteins. cccDNA is the authentic viral transcription template and resistant to current antivirals. Growing evidence shows that the transcriptional activity of cccDNA minichromosome undergoes epigenetic regulations, suggesting a new perspective for anti-cccDNA drug development through targeting histone modifications.

Background: Deliberate self-poisoning (DSP) is one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity, with rodenticides being common compounds used by many victims. However, comprehensive data regarding the spectrum and outcome of rodenticide poisoning is scant.

Method: This retrospective study was conducted in the Emergency Department (ED) of a large tertiary care hospital in South India between January 2017 and December 2018.

Scrub typhus is a zoonotic rickettsial disease caused by the bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi. The non-specificity of presentation, low index of suspicion and the poor availability of diagnostic tests often lead to delayed diagnosis and significant morbidity and mortality. Temperature, humidity, rainfall and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) on the spatio-temporal clustering of scrub typhus cases in children in three contiguous administrative districts in South India over 5 years were studied.

Background: To describe the clinical profile, risk factors, and outcomes that are associated with candida infection among critically ill children.

Patients And Methods: A retrospective case-control study wherein 109 children admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in the years between 2015 and 2017 with the growth of candida from blood, urine, endotracheal (ET) aspirate, and pus swabs were included and compared to 97 age and sex-matched controls chosen from the same time period.

Results: Of the 124 candida isolates from 109 children, 37% were from blood, 24% from urine, and 14% in pus; 40% of the isolates were from ET aspirate.

Challenges in obtaining efficient transduction of brain and spinal cord following systemic AAV delivery have led to alternative administration routes being used in clinical trials that directly infuse the virus into the CNS. However, data comparing different direct AAV injections into the brain remain limited making it difficult to choose optimal routes. Here we tested both AAV9-egfp and AAV9-fLuc delivery via intrastriatal (IST), intracisterna magna (ICM) and lumbar intrathecal (LIT) routes in adult rats and assessed vector distribution and transduction in brain, spinal cord and peripheral tissues.

Objective: To describe COVID-19 in children and the differences between the two waves.

Methods: The electronic medical records of children younger than 16 y of age with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 infection between June 1st 2020 and May 31st 2021 at Christian Medical College, Vellore were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected on a predesigned case record form and analyzed.

The use of tobacco during pregnancy is the leading preventable cause of pregnancy complications and adverse birth outcomes. In high-income countries, around one in 10 pregnant women smokes tobacco, while smokeless tobacco is the primary form of tobacco used in many low- and middle-income countries. Although the risk of tobacco-related harms can be reduced substantially if mothers cease smoking in the first trimester of pregnancy, the proportion of women who successfully quit smoking during pregnancy remains modest.

Inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) are a group of disorders caused by disruption of metabolic pathways, which leads to accumulation, decreased circulating levels, or increased excretion of metabolites as a consequence of the underlying genetic defects. These heterogeneous groups of disorders cause significant neonatal and infant mortality across the whole world and it is of utmost concern for developing countries like India owing to lack of awareness and standard preventive strategies like newborn screening (NBS). Though the predictive cumulative incidence of IEMs is said to be ∼1:800 newborns, data pertaining to the true prevalence of individual IEMs is not available in the context of Indian population.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare critically ill children with multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C), focusing on those who were PCR-positive versus PCR-negative but antibody-positive.
  • Conducted at a pediatric intensive care unit in India, the analysis included 17 children with severe MIS-C, revealing that those who were PCR-negative were older and had higher D-dimer levels.
  • Most children received intensive care and steroid therapy; out of the 17, 14 survived, indicating that early recognition and treatment significantly improve outcomes for MIS-C patients.
