Bacterial Colonization of Mobile Phones: Myth or Reality.

Introduction Bacteria tend to persist on mobile phones for longer durations causing hospital-acquired infections. This is primarily because mobile phones have become an extended hand to healthcare workers due to their unavoidable utilization and the lack of sanitization after use in wards. Methods A questionnaire was used to assess the usage and disinfection practices of mobile phones among medical students regularly attending the wards of a teaching hospital.

Artificial Intelligence for the Interventional Cardiologist: Powering and Enabling OCT Image Interpretation.

Intravascular optical coherence tomography (IVOCT) is a form of intra-coronary imaging that uses near-infrared light to generate high-resolution, cross-sectional, and 3D volumetric images of the vessel. Given its high spatial resolution, IVOCT is well-placed to characterise coronary plaques and aid with decision-making during percutaneous coronary intervention. IVOCT requires significant interpretation skills, which themselves require extensive education and training for effective utilisation, and this would appear to be the biggest barrier to its widespread adoption.

Photobiomodulation (low-level light therapy) and dry eye disease.

Dry eye disease is one of the most common, chief-complaints presenting in clinical practice, with a prevalence of up to 50%. Evaporative dry eye, as a result of meibomian gland dysfunction, is thought to be the biggest component factor. Treatments for meibomian gland dysfunction aim to restore tear film homoeostasis and include warm compress therapy, eyelid hygiene, in-office meibomian gland expression and lipid-containing, artificial tears.

Challenges in diagnosing a metabolic disorder: error of pyruvate metabolism or drug induced?

Certain drugs are known to cause metabolic changes resulting in altered metabolic profiles. We report here a case where a combination of antiepileptic drugs resulted in a profile that mimicked a metabolic disorder. A 16month-old female child on antiepileptic drugs (valproate and topiramate) was suspected to have the inherited metabolic disorder, dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase deficiency, based on clinical symptoms and metabolic profile showing hyperalaninemia, elevated branched-chain amino acids, and lactate-pyruvate ratio.

In vitro and in vivo induction and activation of nNOS by LPS in oligodendrocytes.

There are currently four known isoforms of nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Of these, neuronal NOS (nNOS) is known to be present exclusively in neurons, endothelial NOS (eNOS) in vascular endothelium, while the inducible form of NOS (iNOS) is known to be activated in oligodendrocytes, astrocytes and microglia. The fourth isoform, mitochondrial NOS (mtNOS), represents a post-translational modification of nNOS.

Multiple cardiac metastases from Ewing's sarcoma.

Ewing's sarcoma commonly arises from bone and sometimes from extraskeletal soft tissues. It commonly metastasizes to the lungs, bone, bone marrow and brain. Cardiac metastasis is extremely uncommon.

Antioxidant-associated chemoprevention by sodium selenite in N-nitrosodiethylamine-induced and phenobarbital-promoted hepatocarcinogenesis in rats.

The anticarcinogenic/antioxidant potential of sodium selenite (Se), a micronutrient, was evaluated on liver tumourigenesis induced by N-nitrosodiethylamine (DEN) and promoted by phenobarbital (PB; 0.05% in diet). Male, albino rats of the Wistar strain were exposed intravenously to a single dose of DEN (200 mg x kg(-1) body weight).

Rehabilitating role of glutathione ester on cisplatin induced nephrotoxicity.

Cisplatin caused differential toxic effects on blood glucose and plasma urea, uric acid and creatinine levels. Cisplatin also showed an inhibitory effect on kidney marker enzymes like alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase. However, administration of glutathione ester modulates the toxic side effect of cisplatin observed in kidney enzymes, and in blood parameters.
