In this study, fungi isolated from less explored forest soil ecosystem of Northeast India were studied for the production of potential antimicrobial metabolites (AMM). Out of the 68 fungi isolated from forest soil of Manipur, 7 of them showed AMA against the test pathogens. Among them, Aspergillus terreus (IBSD-F4) showed the most significant activity against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC-25923), Bacillus anthracis (IBSD-C370), Pseudomonas fluorescens (ATCC-13525), Salmonella typhimurium (ATCC-14028), Escherichia coli (ATCC-25922) and Candida albicans (ATCC-10231).

Towards assessing the genetic diversity and occurrence of Trichoderma species from the Indian region of Indo-Burma Biodiversity hotspot, a total of 193 Trichoderma strains were isolated from cultivated soils of nine different districts of Manipur comprising 4 different agroclimatic zones. The isolates were grouped based on the morphological characteristics. ITS-RFLP of the rDNA region using three restriction digestion enzymes: Mob1, Taq1, and Hinf1, showed interspecific variations among 65 isolates of Trichoderma.

Development of microbial inoculants from rhizobacterial isolates with potential for plant growth promotion and root disease suppression require rigorous screening.
