Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether gray matter volume and diffusion-based metrics in associated white matter changed in breachers who had neuroimaging performed at two timepoints. A secondary purpose was to compare these changes in a group who had a one-year interval between their imaging timepoints to a group that had a two-year interval between imaging.

Methods: Between timepoints, clusters with significantly different gray matter volume were used as seeds for reconstruction of associated structural networks using diffusion metrics.

Mutated KRAS proteins are frequently expressed in some of the most lethal human cancers and thus have been a target of intensive drug discovery efforts for decades. Lately, KRAS(G12C) switch-II pocket (SII-P)-targeting covalent small molecule inhibitors have finally reached clinical practice. Sotorasib (AMG-510) was the first FDA-approved covalent inhibitor to treat KRAS(G12C)-positive nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC), followed soon by adagrasib (MRTX849).

The diversity of chemical and structural attributes of proteins makes it inherently difficult to produce a wide range of proteins in a single recombinant protein production system. The nature of the target proteins themselves, along with cost, ease of use, and speed, are typically cited as major factors to consider in production. Despite a wide variety of alternative expression systems, most recombinant proteins for research and therapeutics are produced in a limited number of systems: Escherichia coli, yeast, insect cells, and the mammalian cell lines HEK293 and CHO.

Graphullerene is a novel two-dimensional carbon allotrope with unique optoelectronic properties. Despite significant experimental characterization and prior density functional theory calculations, unanswered questions remain as to the nature, energy, and intensity of the electronic and optical excitations. Here, we present first-principles calculations of the quasiparticle band structure, neutral excitations, and absorption spectra of monolayer graphullerene and bulk graphullerite, employing the GW-Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW-BSE) approach.

2D materials (2DMs) are fundamentally electro-mechanical systems. Their environment unavoidably strains them and modifies their quantum transport properties. For instance, a simple uniaxial strain can completely turn off the conductance of ballistic graphene or switch on/off the superconducting phase of magic-angle bilayer graphene.

In terrestrial vertebrates, the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum (SC), provides a durable and flexible interface with the environment and is comprised of corneocytes embedded in lipids. However, the morphology and lipid composition of the SC varies throughout evolutionary history. Because crocodilians and birds phylogenetically bracket the Archosaurian clade, lipid composition in crocodilian SC may be compared with that of birds and other vertebrates to make inferences about broader phylogenetic patterns within Archosaurs while highlighting adaptations in vertebrate skin.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked into how getting older affects blood flow and the structure of the brain.
  • Researchers thought that older people would have less gray matter and lower blood flow in the brain compared to younger people.
  • They found that while older people had lower blood flow and less gray matter, their brain still activated normally during memory tasks, suggesting that aging affects blood flow but not memory ability in the same way.

Lignin is a group of cell wall localised heterophenolic polymers varying in the chemistry of the aromatic and aliphatic parts of its units. The lignin residues common to all vascular plants have an aromatic ring with one para hydroxy group and one meta methoxy group, also called guaiacyl (G). The terminal function of the aliphatic part of these G units, however, varies from alcohols, which are generally abundant, to aldehydes, which represent a smaller proportion of lignin monomers.

Background: Cannabis poisonings among children are of public health concern. Existing evidence from the US and from four provinces in Canada (Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia) indicate an increase in pediatric cannabis-related poisonings since the legalization of cannabis. This study evaluates trends in cannabis-related poisoning pediatric emergency department (ED) visits and hospitalizations in Canada and addresses a gap in literature by describing trends and context around cannabis edible-related poisoning cases using data from a Canadian sentinel surveillance system.

The intrinsic weak and highly nonlocal dielectric screening of two-dimensional materials is well-known to lead to high sensitivity of their optoelectronic properties to environment. Less studied theoretically is the role of free carriers in those properties. Here, we use ab initio GW and Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations, with a rigorous treatment of dynamical screening and local-field effects, to study the doping dependence of the quasiparticle and optical properties of a monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide, 2H MoTe.

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) semiconductors exhibit strong excitonic optical resonances, which serve as a microscopic, noninvasive probe into their fundamental properties. Like the hydrogen atom, such excitons can exhibit an entire Rydberg series of resonances. Excitons have been extensively studied in most TMDCs (MoS, MoSe, WS, and WSe), but detailed exploration of excitonic phenomena has been lacking in the important TMDC material molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe).

Stroke is a devastating disease that results in neurological deficits and represents a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Following a stroke, there is a degree of spontaneous recovery of function, the neural basis of which is of great interest among clinicians in their efforts to reduce disability following stroke and enhance rehabilitation. Conventionally, work on spontaneous recovery has tended to focus on the neural reorganization of motor cortical regions, with comparably little attention being paid to changes in non-motor regions and how these relate to recovery.
