Lung adenocarcinoma presenting as acute hypoxemic respiratory failure.

Lung adenocarcinoma usually presents with cough, hemoptysis, and weight loss with radiologic findings of suspicious nodules and masses. It rarely mimics other diseases such as pneumonia. We here present a case of a female patient who presented with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure and radiologic findings of multi-lobar consolidation and was found to have lung adenocarcinoma.

Cardiac Arrest as First Presentation of Thyroid Storm.

Thyroid storm is a life-threatening condition characterized by a high level of circulating thyroid hormones and harbors high mortality and morbidity, even if diagnosed and treated early. The condition is frequently overlooked and under-recognized in emergency departments owing to its rarity. Here, we present a case of a 24-year-old male patient, previously healthy, who presented with cardiac arrest and was found to have heart failure and high thyroid hormone levels after investigations.

Presence of Macrotroponin for Over 2 Years in a Young Woman.

We present the case of a 28-year-old woman who presented with nonspecific symptoms with a high-sensitivity troponin I level > 10,000 ng/L, which led to extensive investigations and a hospital stay. Follow-up testing using an alternate troponin assay yielded undetectable levels. Two years later, the patient had a high-sensitivity troponin I level > 1500 ng/L, with experiments confirming the presence of a macrocomplex.

Two patients with history of cardiac ablation presented with massive hemoptysis secondary to pulmonary vein stenosis. They underwent successful pulmonary vein angioplasty and stenting. Although the second patient ended up having a lobectomy, the successful opening of the Left Superior Pulmonary Vein helped sparing the superior lobe and lingula.

Detection of Pb, Ba, and Sb in Cadaveric Maggots and Pupae by ICP-MS.

The concentrations of lead (Pb), barium (Ba), and antimony (Sb), characteristic of GSR, were determined in soil sediments and immature (larvae) of cadaveric flies of the family Calliphoridae, by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This research refers to a case study from two real crime scenes in which the corpses were in an advanced state of decomposition. In case 1, the victim had holes similar to gunshot wounds, and in case 2, there was no evidence of perforations in the corpse.

Infantile Cytomegalovirus-Associated Severe Warm Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia: A Case Report.

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia is a rare hematologic entity in children. Etiologies are mainly viruses or bacteria. We describe here a case of severe warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (IgG- and C3d-positive direct antiglobulin test) in an immunocompetent 6-month-old infant with acute Cytomegalovirus infection that responded well to corticotherapy and intraveneous immunoglobulins without using blood component transfusion.

Exogenous triacylglycerol inhibits insulin-stimulated glucose transport in L6 muscle cells in vitro.

This study tested the hypothesis using cultured L6 myocytes that insulin resistance in muscle may be the consequence of triacylglycerol accretion in the tissue itself. Exposure of L6 myocytes to triacylglycerol for 4 hours resulted in significant transfer of lipid into the cells compared to control cells treated for only 5 min. Insulin-stimulated 2-deoxyglucose uptake in L6 myocytes was reduced when the cells were preloaded with triacylglycerol.
