Current velocity significantly affected the biomass and shoot density of aquatic macrophytes in two slow-flowing rivers in western Canada. Studies of aquatic macrophyte communities at three sites on the Bow River, Alberta, Canada, between 1982 and 1985 showed that biomass decreased with increasing current velocity within the weed bed over the range 0.01-1 m/s; at current speeds in excess of 1 m/s, aquatic macrophytes were rare.

Similar arrangements of hydrophobic peptides and heptad repeat units exist in coronavirus peplomer proteins and influenza virus haemagglutinins. This suggests that there may be similarities in the structures of these proteins and in the functions of the hydrophobic fusion-related regions during virus entry.

Fenoldopam (SK&F 82526) is a short-acting selective dopamine-1 agonist in clinical trials for the treatment of hypertension, congestive heart failure and renal failure. In the present study, we tested various N-ethyl carbamate esters of fenoldopam in the conscious dog instrumented with a femoral arterial Vascular-Access-Port and a renal artery flow probe. Oral administration of SK&F R-82526 at 1 and 3 mumol/kg resulted in transient (30-60 min) dose-dependent increases in plasma fenoldopam levels and renal blood flow.

Foreign genes inserted into these sites are shown to be present in two copies in the resultant recombinant virus. Human interferon alpha 1 (HuIFN alpha 1) is known to protect bovine as well as human cells against viral infection. Hence, we investigated the specificity and tissue distribution of receptors for HuIFN alpha 1 on various cells. Eleven patients (18%) had complete and 24 (39%) partial tumour regression, 12 (20%) had stable disease for a minimum of six months and 14 (23%) no response. The nucleotide sequence of the gene encoding the matrix (M) protein of the Beaudette C strain of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) has been determined from overlapping cDNA clones. Control sequences typical of paramyxovirus mRNA start and polyadenylation signals have been identified. Assuming that the M gene starts and finishes at these sequences, the M gene is 1241 nucleotides long and encodes one long open reading frame of 364 amino acids, corresponding to a polypeptide of molecular weight 39605, in good agreement with estimates from SDS gels.
