Purpose: Osteoradionecrosis of the jaw (ORNJ) is a severe iatrogenic disease characterized by bone death after radiation therapy (RT) to the head and neck. With over 9 published definitions and at least 16 classification systems, the true incidence and severity of ORNJ are obscured by lack of a standard for disease definition and severity assessment, leading to inaccurate estimation of incidence, reporting ambiguity, and likely under-diagnosis worldwide. This study aimed to achieve consensus on an explicit definition and phenotype of ORNJ and related precursor states through data standardization to facilitate effective diagnosis, monitoring, and multidisciplinary management of ORNJ.

Inorganic fillers play an important role in improving the ionic conductivity of solid composite electrolytes (SCEs) for Li-ion batteries. Among inorganic fillers, perovskite-type lithium lanthanum titanate (LLTO) stands out for its high bulk Li conductivity on the order of 10 S cm at room temperature. According to a literature survey, the optimal LLTO filler should possess the following characteristics: i) a single-crystal structure to minimize grain boundaries; ii) a small particle size to increase the filler/polymer interface area; iii) a 1D morphology for efficient interface channels; and iv) cubic symmetry to facilitate rapid bulk Li diffusion within the filler.

Article Synopsis
  • Evolutionary arms races occur between host and viral proteins, where genetic variants are constantly evolving, particularly in proteins like PKR that play a role in the immune response against viruses.
  • PKR acts as a detector of viral replication and combats it by inhibiting protein synthesis, but it also faces challenges from viral antagonists that try to disable its function.
  • Research into PKR's variants revealed that it has rapidly changing regions that can resist viral antagonists, offering insights into how PKR can adapt and maintain its effectiveness against evolving viral threats.

Proteogenomics is a growing "multi-omics" research area that combines mass spectrometry-based proteomics and high-throughput nucleotide sequencing technologies. Proteogenomics has helped in genomic annotation for organisms whose complete genome sequences became available by using high-throughput DNA sequencing technologies. Apart from genome annotation, this multi-omics approach has also helped researchers confirm expression of variant proteins belonging to unique proteoforms that could have resulted from single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), insertion and deletions (Indels), splice isoforms, or other genome or transcriptome variations.
