Assistive Technology to Support Dementia Management: Protocol for a Scoping Review of Reviews.

Background: In Canada, more than 60% of persons living with dementia reside in their own homes, and over 25% rely heavily on their care partners (ie, family members or friends) for assistance with daily activities such as personal hygiene, eating, and walking. Assistive technology (AT) is a key dementia management strategy, helping to maintain health and social support in home and community settings. AT comprises assistive products and services required for safe and effective use.

Implementing digital devices to maintain family connections during the COVID-19 pandemic: Experience of a large academic urban hospital.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown imposed drastic measures at hospitals internationally to rapidly pivot their approaches to patient care. Early on when the pandemic was declared, hospitals responded to local public health restrictions by limiting all non-essential visits for their patients. Digital devices allowed Canadians to remain connected with their friends and families during the imposed isolation restrictions.

Creation of a Clinical Demonstration Unit: Embedding Academic Research into Point of Care in a Geriatric Unit.

Given that there are limited evidence-informed non-pharmacological interventions to treat behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, a specialized psychiatric hospital partnered with an academic university to create a clinical demonstration unit (CDU) - a learning health systems (LHS) model to advance dementia care. In this paper, we identify five key enablers that led to the successful creation of the CDU, its achievements and challenges encountered. The paper provides learnings for other healthcare providers who are considering initiating an LHS model within their setting to advance patient care.
