Background And Purpose: Resistance training exercise provides increases in muscle size and is used by coaches and health care professional as a tool to improve functional performance. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of 10 weeks of resistance training program performed on the bench press (BP) exercise on the hypertrophic responses of four different muscles (pectoralis major, anterior and medial deltoid, brachii, and pectoralis minor) involved in the task compared to controls.

Methods: Twenty-four healthy males were recruited, and thirteen performed a resistance training intervention while eleven were control.

Importance: Test accuracy studies often use small datasets to simultaneously select an optimal cutoff score that maximizes test accuracy and generate accuracy estimates.

Objective: To evaluate the degree to which using data-driven methods to simultaneously select an optimal Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) cutoff score and estimate accuracy yields (1) optimal cutoff scores that differ from the population-level optimal cutoff score and (2) biased accuracy estimates.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This study used cross-sectional data from an existing individual participant data meta-analysis (IPDMA) database on PHQ-9 screening accuracy to represent a hypothetical population.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores the effectiveness of remote tele-mentored ultrasound (RTMUS) in diagnosing pulmonary conditions in ICUs, comparing it to point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), specifically for diagnosing pulmonary oedema, pneumonia, and COPD.
  • - Conducted in three adult ICUs with 23 patients, the results showed RTMUS had good accuracy for COPD (89.96%) and reasonable levels for pulmonary oedema (71.43%), but performed less effectively for pneumonia (65.22%).
  • - The findings suggest RTMUS could be a viable alternative to POCUS for certain conditions, but the authors caution that further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these results.

Pioneer facilities for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) convert fats, oils, and grease into hydrocarbons using the Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) technology. However, limited feedstock availability and sustainability concerns may restrict broader adoption. Biotechnology offers an alternative by enabling microbial oil production from sugars, expanding the feedstock portfolio with more productive biomass sources or waste materials.

Article Synopsis
  • Plastic production poses future greenhouse gas emission challenges, with advanced recycling and bio-based production being key solutions.
  • Brazil has the potential to supply global bio-based polyethylene (bioPE) demand by 2050 using sugarcane, but must ensure environmental sustainability.
  • To achieve this, efficient land use is crucial, aiming for minimal trade-offs regarding land change, biodiversity, and water resources while reducing overall demand for bioPE.

Purpose: To histologically quantify the different tissues that make up the porcine ureter, (epithelial, connective, and muscular tissue) in the three segments labelled: cranial, middle and caudal, in order to identify the segment most compatible for use as a vascular graft.

Methods: Fifteen porcine ureters were collected, divided into the three segments, and the samples were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, picrosirius red and Weigert's resorcin-fuchsin. The immunohistochemistry technique was applied for alpha-smooth muscle actin.

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), began in 2019. One of the strategies for pandemic control was mass vaccination. In Brazil, the recombinant COVID-19 vaccine (RCV) was produced on a large scale and offered at no charge to the population.

There are discrepancies in resources and expertise available between pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) in Brazil that likely significantly impact the clinical outcomes of patients. The goal of this study was to evaluate the impact of telemedicine rounding support in two public PICUs located in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil. Our intervention involves telehealth rounds connecting two "level II" PICUs with specialist doctors from a hospital of recognized excellence.

Transitioning from a fossil-based to a bio-based economy is crucial to climate action and achieving neutrality in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Biofuel production is an essential land-based GHG mitigation alternative. However, it raises concerns about biodiversity conservation, competition with food production, and net GHG emissions associated with direct land-use change (dLUC).

Sugarcane straw removal for bioenergy production will increase substantially in the next years, but this may deplete soil organic carbon (SOC) and exacerbate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These aspects are not consistently approached in bioenergy life cycle assessment (LCA). Using SOC modeling and LCA approach, this study addressed the life cycle GHG balance from sugarcane agroindustry in different scenarios of straw removal, considering the potential SOC changes associated with straw management in sugarcane-cultivated soils in Brazil.

The ()-norcoclaurine synthase from (NCS) stereoselectively catalyzes the Pictet-Spengler reaction between dopamine and 4-hydroxyphenylacetaldehyde to give ()-norcoclaurine. NCS can catalyze the Pictet-Spengler reaction with various aldehydes and ketones, leading to diverse tetrahydroisoquinolines. This substrate promiscuity positions NCS as a highly promising enzyme for synthesizing fine chemicals.

Introduction: Effects on strength performance and muscle activation in the contralateral limb have been observed after training with the ipsilateral limb (IL). Cross fatigue effects in the contralateral limb (CL) can occur at intervals of up to 48 h after a training session performed with the ipsilateral limb. The objective of this study was to verify the effect of a training session in the ipsilateral limb, on the strength and activation of the muscles in the contralateral limb also submitted to the training protocol.
