Extracellular matrix (ECM)-based small-diameter vascular grafts (SDVGs, inner diameter (ID) < 6 mm) hold great promise for clinical applications. However, existing ECM-based SDVGs suffer from limited donor availability, complex purification, high cost, and insufficient mechanical properties. SDVGs with ECM-like structure and function, and good mechanical properties were rapidly prepared by optimizing common materials and preparation, which can improve their clinical prospects.

Reverse genetics (RG) systems are extensively utilized to investigate the characteristics of influenza viruses and develop vaccines, predominantly relying on human RNA polymerase I (pol I). However, the efficiency of RG systems for avian-origin influenza viruses may be compromised due to potential species-specific interactions of RNA pol I. In this study, we reported the polymerase activities of the duck RNA pol I promoter in avian cells and the generation of recombinant avian-derived influenza viruses using a novel vector system containing the duck RNA pol I promoter region to enhance the rescue efficiency of the RG system in avian cells.

Postoperative Ketamine May be Associated with Venous Thromboembolism in Chronic Opioid Users After Spine Surgery.

Objective: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a serious postoperative adverse event after spine surgery. In patients with pain refractory to typical multimodal analgesia regimens after spine surgery, whom are often chronic opioid users, perioperative ketamine is an alternative analgesic that has grown in popularity. The aim of this study is to assess the risk of VTE in chronic opioid users undergoing spine surgery.

Mercaptoimidazole-capped gold nanoparticles as a potent agent against plant pathogenic fungi.

Plant pathogenic fungi pose a substantial challenge to agricultural production, but the conventional fungicide-based approaches are losing importance. As agents with broad-spectrum antibacterial effects, gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) are found to have antifungal effects; however, no study has examined their application in agriculture as fungicides. Accordingly, this study investigates the activity of 2-mercaptoimidazole-capped Au NPs (MI-Au NPs) against the 'top' plant pathogenic fungi, finding that they could inhibit , , and by inducing cytoplasmic leakage.

Advancing DIEP Flap Monitoring with Optical Imaging Techniques: A Narrative Review.

Objectives: This review aims to explore recent advancements in optical imaging techniques for monitoring the viability of Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) flap reconstruction. The objectives include highlighting the principles, applications, and clinical utility of optical imaging modalities such as near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence angiography, laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI), hyperspectral imaging (HSI), dynamic infrared thermography (DIRT), and short-wave infrared thermography (SWIR) in assessing tissue perfusion and oxygenation. Additionally, this review aims to discuss the potential of these techniques in enhancing surgical outcomes by enabling timely intervention in cases of compromised flap perfusion.

Etiology and Outcomes of Patients with Extreme Hyperbilirubinemia in Korea: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background/aim: Extreme hyperbilirubinemia is occasionally observed in intensive care unit (ICU) and non-ICU settings. This study examined the etiologies of extreme hyperbilirubinemia (bilirubin level ≥12 mg/dL) and the factors associated with the 30-day mortality.

Methods: This retrospective observational cohort study identified 439 patients with extreme hyperbilirubinemia at the Gyeongsang National University Changwon Hospital between 2016 and 2020.

Astrocytes are a direct target of neuromodulators and can influence neuronal activity on broad spatial and temporal scales in response to a rise in cytosolic calcium. However, our knowledge about how astrocytes are recruited during different animal behaviors remains limited. To measure astrocyte activity calcium in vivo during normative behaviors, we utilize a high-resolution, long working distance multicore fiber optic imaging system that allows visualization of individual astrocyte calcium transients in the cerebral cortex of freely moving mice.

Safety and Immune Responses Following Anti-PD-1 Monoclonal Antibody Infusions in Healthy Persons With Human Immunodeficiency Virus on Antiretroviral Therapy.

Methods: This was a phase 1/2, randomized (4:1), double-blind, placebo-controlled study in adults with suppressed HIV on antiretroviral therapy with CD4 counts ≥350 cells/μL who received 2 infusions of cemiplimab versus placebo. The primary outcome was safety, defined as any grade 3 or higher adverse event (AE) or any immune-related AE (irAE).

Pharmacologic therapeutics in sarcopenia with chronic kidney disease.
