A taxonomic study was carried out on two bacterial strains, PCP11(T) and PCP104, isolated from a tidal flat of the Yellow Sea, Korea. Separation of SF6 from gas mixtures using gas hydrate formation.

This study aims to examine the thermodynamic feasibility of separating sulfur hexafluoride (SF(6)), which is widely used in various industrial fields and is one of the most potent greenhouse gases, from gas mixtures using gas hydrate formation. The key process variables of hydrate phase equilibria, pressure-composition diagram, formation kinetics, and structure identification of the mixed gas hydrates, were closely investigated to verify the overall concept of this hydrate-based SF(6) separation process. The three-phase equilibria of hydrate (H), liquid water (L(W)), and vapor (V) for the binary SF(6) + water mixture and for the ternary N(2) + SF(6) + water mixtures with various SF(6) vapor compositions (10, 30, 50, and 70%) were experimentally measured to determine the stability regions and formation conditions of pure and mixed hydrates.

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is caused by multiple factors, including carcinogen exposure. Insulin-like growth factor II mRNA-binding protein 3 (IMP3) is highly expressed in various cancer cells but is rarely expressed in normal cells. Array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) provides a genome-wide technique for identifying chromosomal aberrations in human diseases, including cancer. Chromosomal aberrations in cancers are defined as regions that contain an increased or decreased DNA copy number, relative to normal samples. The identification of genomic regions associated with systematic aberrations provides insights into initiation and progression of cancer, and improves diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy strategies.

Itraconazole and rifampin alter significantly the disposition and antihistamine effect of ebastine and its metabolites in healthy participants.

The present study was performed to elucidate the effects of itraconazole and rifampin on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of ebastine, a nonsedative H1 receptor antagonist. In a 3-way crossover sequential design with 2-week washouts, 10 healthy participants were pretreated with itraconazole for 6 days, rifampin for 10 days, or neither. After oral administration of 20 mg ebastine, blood and urine samples were collected for 72 and 24 hours, respectively, and histamine-induced wheal and flare reactions were measured to assess the antihistamine response for 12 hours.

Risk factors and dose-effect relationship for mandibular osteoradionecrosis in oral and oropharyngeal cancer patients.

Purpose: To analyze risk factors and the dose-effect relationship for osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the mandible after radiotherapy of oral and oropharyngeal cancers.

Materials And Methods: One-hundred ninety-eight patients with oral (45%) and oropharyngeal cancer (55%) who had received external radiotherapy between 1990 and 2000 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients had a dental evaluation before radiotherapy.

The rates of antibiotic susceptibility and resistance were investigated in Streptococcus iniae and Streptococcus parauberis isolates obtained from diseased olive flounders (Paralichthys olivaceus) collected from fish farms in Jeju Island, Korea. Purpose: To demonstrate the long-term treatment outcomes of endovenous laser ablation (EVA) of incompetent small saphenous veins (SSV) with a 980-nm diode laser.

Materials And Methods: Eighty-four patients (96 limbs), with varicose veins and reflux in the SSV on duplex ultrasound examination, were treated with a 980-nm diode laser under ultrasound- or fluoroscopy-guidance. Patients were evaluated at 1 week and 1, 3, 6 months, 1 year and yearly thereafter.

Migration of an implantable port catheter tip is one of the well-known complications of this procedure, but the etiology of this problem is not clear. We describe here a case of migration of the tip of a port catheter from the right atrium to the right axillary vein in a patient with severe cough. Coughing was suggested for this case as the cause of the catheter tip migration.

Expression of carbonic anhydrase IX is associated with postoperative recurrence and poor prognosis in surgically treated oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Carbonic anhydrase IX (CA9) is reportedly overexpressed in several types of carcinomas, but little is known about the expression pattern of CA9 in oral cavity cancer and the corresponding normal tissues. We aimed to assess the prevalence of CA9 expression and its prognostic implications in patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Immunohistochemical staining with anti-CA9 antibody was performed in 117 oral SCC samples.

Introduction: Daily cigarette smoking among US adolescents remains a significant public health problem. Understanding risk is important in order to develop strategies to reduce this type of tobacco use.

Purpose: The primary objective of this research was to examine whether rural residency is an independent risk factor for being a daily smoker among adolescents ages 12 to 18 years.

Genetic variations and haplotypes of UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A locus in a Korean population.

Glucuronidation catalyzed by UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) is one of the most important mechanisms for host defense against xenobiotics and endobiotics. Although genetic polymorphisms of several UGT1A isoforms have been reported separately, the haplotypes in all functional exons have not been identified, and little information is available regarding single nucleotide polymorphisms in Koreans. We analyzed genetic polymorphisms in all functional exons of the UGT1A locus by direct sequencing of genomic DNA from 50 healthy Korean subjects, and their haplotypes were inferred from genotype data using an expectation-maximization algorithm.

This study was performed to elucidate the metabolism of benidipine and its enantiomers in human liver microsomes (HLMs) and to characterize the cytochrome P450 (P450) enzymes that are involved in the metabolism of benidipine.
