A Stable Finite-Difference Scheme for Population Growth and Diffusion on a Map.

We describe a general Godunov-type splitting for numerical simulations of the Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovski-Piskunov growth and diffusion equation on a world map with Neumann boundary conditions. The procedure is semi-implicit, hence quite stable. Our principal application for this solver is modeling human population dispersal over geographical maps with changing paleovegetation and paleoclimate in the late Pleistocene.

TNFA promoter alleles--frequencies and linkage with classical HLA genes in a South German Caucasian population.

The tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFA) promoter region exhibits several polymorphisms, which have been hypothesized to influence gene expression, thereby associating positively or negatively with inflammatory conditions. Many studies have focused on single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) taking not into account additive or inverse effects between different SNPs. We typed 1,021 healthy Caucasian volunteer stem cell donors for their TNFA promoter as well as their HLA-A,-C,-B,-DRB1 loci.

Endovascular stent treatment for symptomatic benign iliofemoral venous occlusive disease: long-term results 1987-2009.

Venous stenting has been shown to effectively treat iliofemoral venous obstruction with good short- and mid-term results. The aim of this study was to investigate long-term clinical outcome and stent patency. Twenty patients were treated with venous stenting for benign disease at our institution between 1987 and 2005.

Stent implantation for malignant pulmonary artery stenosis in a metastasizing non-small cell bronchial carcinoma.

A 58-year-old patient with recently diagnosed non-small cell bronchial carcinoma was referred to us with increasing shortness of breath and orthopnea by her family practitioner. To exclude the possibility of a pulmonary embolism, contrast medium-enhanced angio-CT of the thorax was performed. This showed a large mediastinal tumor, which, on the one hand, infiltrated and occluded the left upper lobe bronchus and, on the other, constricted the left pulmonary artery over a considerable part of its length.

[Pelvic congestion syndrom].

We describe imaging findings and interventional therapy of a 37-year old female patient suffering from chronic pelvic pain with associated vulvar varicosis. MR-angiography showed multiple varices in the left hemi-pelvis, a dilated draining vein from the left ovary as well as a left-sided vulvar varicosis, which was clinically evident. In addition, the MRI suggested insufficiency of the great saphenous vein with varicosis of its tributaries.
