The gluteal sling: an anatomical study.

Introduction: Sciatic nerve palsy is a devastating complication which may be seen after acetabular exposure in total hip resurfacing via a posterior approach. An anatomical structure termed as the "gluteal sling" was suggested to play a role in sciatic nerve palsies during this operation. "Gluteal sling" is formed by the attachment of the deep fibers of the inferior part of the gluteus maximus on the gluteal tuberosity of the femur and the lateral intermuscular septum.

Severe leukemoid reaction in a preterm infant with congenital cytomegalovirus infection.

Leukemoid reaction, defined as a total leukocyte count of >50,000/mm, is most commonly related to antenatal administration of steroids, infections, and transient myeloproliferative disorder of Down syndrome in newborns. Atypical presentations of viral infections can be a diagnostic challenge in the newborn period. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection causes a multisystem disease, and symptomatic infants generally present with intrauterine growth restriction, hepatosplenomegaly, cholestasis, rash, thrombocytopenia, and microcephaly.

A contact line pinning based microfluidic platform for modelling physiological flows.

This work introduces a contact line pinning based microfluidic platform for the generation of interstitial and intramural flows within a three dimensional (3D) microenvironment for cellular behaviour studies. A contact line pinning method was used to confine a natively derived biomatrix, collagen, in microfluidic channels without walls. By patterning collagen in designated wall-less channels, we demonstrated and validated the intramural flows through a microfluidic channel bounded by a monolayer of endothelial cells (mimic of a vascular vessel), as well as slow interstitial flows within a cell laden collagen matrix using the same microfluidic platform.

Manganese-enhanced MRI to evaluate neurodegenerative changes in a rat model of kainic acid-induced excitotoxicity.

Purpose: Manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) has been used to detect brain activity based on the ability of active neurons to take up manganese ions through calcium channels. Kainic acid (KA), an analog of excitotoxic glutamate, can elicit selective neuronal death in the brains of rodents, of which the pathological changes partially mimic neurodegeneration in the central nervous system. We used in vivo MEMRI to evaluate neurodegenerative changes in an excitotoxicity model induced by KA in rats.

An uncommon case of neurofibromatosis type 2: a tribute to the intracranial calcifications.

Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) is a genetic disorder associated with schwannomas, meningiomas, and ependymomas. Intracranial calcifications, either tumoral or non-tumoral, are relatively lesser known features of NF2. Here, we present a case of NF2, in which the diagnosis was suspected due to the presence of choroid plexus and subependymal calcifications, although no obvious schwannoma or meningioma was detected initially on standard computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging.

Primary lymph node gastrinoma: a rare cause of abdominal pain in childhood.

Gastrinoma is a hormone-secreting tumor associated with the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is quite rare among children. The discovery of gastrinomas in unusual locations such as lymph nodes, bones, ovaries, and the liver poses a diagnostic dilemma as to whether the tumor is primary or metastatic.

A novel mutation in ABCC8 gene in a newborn with congenital hyperinsulinism -a case report.

Congenital hyperinsulinism (CHI) is the most common cause of persistent hypoglycemia in infancy. The genetic basis of CHI includes a variety of defects in key genes regulating insulin secretion. Mutations in at least seven genes are found in 50% of cases.

Quantitative evaluation of the anatomical parameters for subaxial cervical spondylectomy: an anatomical study.

Object: The object of this investigation was to conduct a morphometric study in cadavers to determine anatomical structures, their relationships, and their morphometry for subaxial cervical spondylectomy.

Methods: Forty sides of 20 cadavers were used for this study. Dissections were performed in 2 stages (anteriorly and posteriorly).

Medical students' attitudes towards science and gross anatomy, and the relationship to personality.

Assessment of the personalities of medical students can enable medical educators to formulate strategies for the best development of academic and clinical competencies. Previous research has shown that medical students do not share a common personality profile, there being gender differences. We have also shown that, for French medical students, students with personality traits associated with strong competitiveness are selected for admission to medical school.

Carotid intima-media thickness increase in patients with habitual simple snoring and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is associated with metabolic syndrome.

Objectives: Sleep disorders are emerging risk factors for atherosclerosis. Increased carotid intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT) is a surrogate marker of cardiovascular risk. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between CCA-IMT and habitual simple snoring or obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and the other cardiovascular risk factors.

Quality of life after stapler haemorrhoidectomy evaluated by SF-36 questionnaire.

Objective: Hemorrhoids are normal elements of the anal canal anatomy and they become symptomatic with potential factors such as gravity or strain. When symptomatic, hemorrhoidal disease can be costly measured in time away from productive activities. The aim of the study was to assess changes in the quality of life of patients after hemorrhoidectomy using Short Form-36.

Fuzzy-logic modeling of Fenton's strong chemical oxidation process treating three types of landfill leachates.

Three multiple input and multiple output-type fuzzy-logic-based models were developed as an artificial intelligence-based approach to model a novel integrated process (UF-IER-EDBM-FO) consisted of ultrafiltration (UF), ion exchange resins (IER), electrodialysis with bipolar membrane (EDBM), and Fenton's oxidation (FO) units treating young, middle-aged, and stabilized landfill leachates. The FO unit was considered as the key process for implementation of the proposed modeling scheme. Four input components such as H(2)O(2)/chemical oxygen demand ratio, H(2)O(2)/Fe(2+) ratio, reaction pH, and reaction time were fuzzified in a Mamdani-type fuzzy inference system to predict the removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon, color, and ammonia nitrogen.

A novel missense mutation (N78D) in a family with von Hippel-Lindau disease with central nervous system haemangioblastomas, pancreatic and renal cysts.

von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is a hereditary tumor syndrome caused by mutations in the VHL tumor suppressor gene. In a family with VHL, we identified a novel missense mutation (N78D), which affects a fully conserved residue in the VHL protein. Interestingly, several other missense mutations reported at same codon in the VHL protein that might be associated with a low risk of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) but not pheochromocytoma appear to be associated with a VHL type 1 phenotype.

A tabu search approach for the NMR protein structure-based assignment problem.

Spectroscopy is an experimental technique which exploits the magnetic properties of specific nuclei and enables the study of proteins in solution. The key bottleneck of NMR studies is to map the NMR peaks to corresponding nuclei, also known as the assignment problem. Structure-Based Assignment (SBA) is an approach to solve this computationally challenging problem by using prior information about the protein obtained from a homologous structure.

Keratoconus presenting with bilateral simultaneous acute corneal hydrops.

Purpose: To report a case of unknown keratoconus presenting with bilateral simultaneous acute corneal hydrops.

Methods: Case report.

Results: A case of a 12-year-old male patient with Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) presented with sudden whitening and lacrimation for 2 days in both eyes simultaneously.

Changes in permeability and in mechanical properties of layer-by-layer films made from poly(allylamine) and montmorillonite postmodified upon reaction with dopamine.

Polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) films present a versatile surface functionalization method allowing to address many applications. These coatings suffer; however, from weak mechanical properties this problem can be addressed by the regular incorporation of clays in the layering process. To allow for an even better control of a whole set of film properties, among them their thermal stability, their stability in water, and their impermeability to anions, we postmodify (PAH-MMT)(n) films with polydopamine, by putting the pristine PEM films in contact with an oxygenated dopamine solution.

Does the sphenoid angle effect the operation strategy? Anatomical and radiological investigation.

Aim: The aim of our study is to suggest the sphenoid wing-lesser wing angulation (SWA) importance during surgeries directed to this region.

Material And Methods: SWA on 40 skulls were measured bilaterally (n=80). The depth of the middle cranial fossa (DMCF) at the level of the SWA was determined.

Puffed-cheek computed tomography: a dynamic maneuver for imaging oral cavity tumors.

We conducted a prospective study to compare the effectiveness of conventional computed tomography (CT) and puffed-cheek CT in detecting the presence and extension of oral cavity malignant tumors. We enrolled 11 patients--5 men and 6 women, aged 32 to 85 years--who had a primary squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity. These tumors were located in the floor of the mouth in 4 patients, in the buccal mucosa in 4, in both the buccal mucosa and retromolar trigone in 2, and in the retromolar trigone only in 1.

The effects of image compression on quantitative measurements of digital panoramic radiographs.

Objectives: The aims of this study were to explore how image compression affects density, fractal dimension, linear and angular measurements on digital panoramic images and assess inter and intra-observer repeatability of these measurements.

Study Design: Sixty-one digital panoramic images in TIFF format (Tagged Image File Format) were compressed to JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) images. Two observers measured gonial angle, antegonial angle, mandibular cortical width, coronal pulp width of maxillary and mandibular first molar, tooth length of maxillary and mandibular first molar on the left side of these images twice.

A novel WT1 gene mutation in a newborn infant diagnosed with Denys-Drash syndrome.

Denys-Drash syndrome (DDS) is a rare disorder characterized by glomerulopathy, genital abnormalities and predisposition to Wilms' tumor. Cystic fibrosis presenting with neonatal cholestasis simulating biliary atresia in a patient with a novel mutation.

Neonatal cholestasis is a rare presenting feature of cystic fibrosis which usually cannot be differentiated from other types of cholestasis. Herein, the authors report a 63 d-old boy with cystic fibrosis presenting with neonatal cholestasis mimicking biliary atresia. A new mutation in CFTR gene resulting in severe phenotype has been described.

The trace element analysis in freshwater fish species, water and sediment in Iyidere stream (Rize-Turkey).

Many environmental problems like dam construction, agricultural debris, flooding and industrial establishments threaten Iyidere stream (Rize, Turkey) on the southeastern coast of the Black Sea (Turkey). The trace element concentrations in water, fish and sediments in lyidere stream (Rize, Turkey) were investigated in this study. The concentration of six different elements in ten freshwater fish species and sediment was determined using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence method.

Distribution of HLA antigens in breast cancer.

Investigation of various tumor-specific markers has a critical role in early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The aim of the this study is to investigate the Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) alleles, the molecules that play an important role in immunity and tumor response of the body, and its relationship with breast cancer. In this prospective clinical study, after obtaining approval from the ethics committee of Istanbul University Experimental Medical Research Institute, 22 female patients who have been hospitalized in Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine the Department of General Surgery with a diagnosis of breast cancer were selected.
