These tumors derive from different cells; PTC originates from follicular cells whereas MTC originates from parafollicular cells. Because of this, the treatment of these tumors also differs.

Despite advances in technology, the radiologic assessment of certain head and neck lesions may still pose difficulties because of the complex anatomy of this region, the small and mobile structures that this region harbors, and the apposition of mucosal surfaces in the neutral position. Certain maneuvers have been described in the literature to overcome these difficulties. We review the use of the Valsalva and the modified Valsalva maneuver, the puffed-cheek technique, phonation, and inspiration, with possible applications in head and neck imaging.

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of dynamic laryngeal computed tomography (DLCT) for the detection of vocal cord mobility in larynx cancer.

Methods: Vocal cord mobility of 44 patients (36 men; age range, 49-81 years) with larynx cancer was examined; 13 patients were excluded (owing to poor image quality or bilateral vocal cord involvement), and vocal cord mobility was evaluated for the remaining 31 patients qualitatively and quantitatively with dynamic laryngeal computed tomography during phonation, inspiration, and Valsalva maneuver phase.

Results: The mobile cords were laterally positioned in a straight configuration on inspiration phase.

Objective: To determine the clinical utility of using dynamic maneuvers during imaging of larynx via 256-Slice Multi-Detector Computed Tomography in the pre-therapeutic evaluation of laryngeal tumors.

Materials And Methods: A total of 27 patients (7 women, 20 men; aged 53-76 years) diagnosed with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma were evaluated pre-therapeutically via contrast enhanced axial CT scans during consecutive phases of phonation (PP), inspiration (IP) and Valsalva maneuver (VP).

Results: In 2 of 5 patients diagnosed with T1a glottic tumor, scans obtained during VP and PP were normal while the CT scans obtained during IP clearly showed a mass.

Glomus tumors, especially with some definitive MR imaging features, are diagnosed easily. However, when two glomus tumors are suspected in one single mass, careful evaluation is necessary. We report one patient with two synchronous glomus tumors, ipsilateral glomus tumor of the carotid body and glomus vagale on the right neck, simulating a single mass.

The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate microsurgical thyroidectomy by comparing it with traditional thyroidectomy. Before surgery, patients were assigned either to the microscopic thyroidectomy group (MT group), with the use of the surgical microscope, or the traditional thyroidectomy group (TT group), without the use of visual magnification. Outcome measures were operative time, intraoperative bleeding and complication rates including injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN) or the parathyroid glands.

Laryngotracheal foreign bodies, although less common than bronchial foreign bodies, are potentially more dangerous. We report a 10-year-old girl with Down syndrome with asthma bronchiale symptoms, which was later found to be the result of a thin bone lamella impacted in her larynx. There was no clear history of foreign body aspiration.

We report a new case, which occurred in a 48-year-old woman whose disease had metastasized to regional lymph nodes. With the assistance of one volunteer, we obtained these measurements during 30 sessions over a period of 2 months.
