In Türkiye, anti-tobacco legislation (Law No. 4207 on the Prevention and Control of Harms of Tobacco Products) aims to ensure a "tobacco-free" life for current and future generations. However, there are observations of violations in the hospitality sector.

A marker for acute cholecystitis severity: thiol-disulfide balance and ischemia-modified albumin.

Objective: According to the Tokyo 2018 guidelines, white blood cells (WBCs) are the only markers used in the staging of acute cholecystitis. We aimed to investigate the role of thiol-disulfide and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), which are used in the diagnosis of inflammatory diseases, in the diagnosis, and severity of acute cholecystitis.

Materials And Methods: A total of 108 patients hospitalized with acute cholecystitis and 42 healthy volunteers were included in the study.

In this work, we report that deficiency of ubiquitin-specific protease 39 (USP39) in human cell lines, zebrafish larvae, and mice led to impaired spliceosome assembly and a cytotoxic splicing profile characterized by the use of cryptic 5' splice sites.

Neuroprotective effects of the combined treatment of resveratrol and urapidil in experimental cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats.

Purpose: To evaluate the neuroprotective effect of resveratrol, urapidil, and a combined administration of these drugs against middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) induced ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury model in rats.

Methods: Thirty-five rats were divided into five groups of seven animals each. Animals in IR, IR resveratrol (IRr), IR urapidil (IRu), and IR + combination of resveratrol and urapidil (IRc) were exposed to MCAO induced cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury model.

Optimizing blood loss during the slaughtering process is crucial for obtaining high-quality meat, as the presence of meat blood can lead to a reduction in shelf life and negative sensory evaluation by consumers. Moreover, the high water and nutritional content of the meat, along with its appropriate pH value, necessitate careful consideration of the remaining blood, as it can support microbial spoilage of chicken meat. In this context the effects of making an extra cut on conventionally halal-slaughtered broiler's leg which had an extra cut at the cartilage point where the drumstick and the claw part meet, before the bloodletting process were analysed.

Optimized metrics for orthogonal combinatorial CRISPR screens.

CRISPR-based gene perturbation enables unbiased investigations of single and combinatorial genotype-to-phenotype associations. In light of efforts to map combinatorial gene dependencies at scale, choosing an efficient and robust CRISPR-associated (Cas) nuclease is of utmost importance. Even though SpCas9 and AsCas12a are widely used for single, combinatorial, and orthogonal screenings, side-by-side comparisons remain sparse.

Functional Genomics Approaches to Elucidate Vulnerabilities of Intrinsic and Acquired Chemotherapy Resistance.

Drug resistance is a commonly unavoidable consequence of cancer treatment that results in therapy failure and disease relapse. Intrinsic (pre-existing) or acquired resistance mechanisms can be drug-specific or be applicable to multiple drugs, resulting in multidrug resistance. The presence of drug resistance is, however, tightly coupled to changes in cellular homeostasis, which can lead to resistance-coupled vulnerabilities.

Subwavelength perforated absorbers for infrared detectors.

This paper presents a detailed analysis examining the absorption performance of a metal-dielectric slab with subwavelength size periodic perforations exploiting quarter-wave impedance matching (QWIM) technique within long wave infrared (LWIR) regime (8-12µm). Integration of perforations to a simple stack with various period sizes and perforated area ratios are examined through theory, simulation, and measurements that are in great agreement. Advantages of perforated absorbers for thermal detectors are discussed in maximizing optical absorption and reducing thermal-mass point of view.

This paper presents a detailed comparison between the long wave infrared (LWIR) transmission performances of binary, silicon based, structurally complementary pillar and groove type antireflective gratings that can be used for wafer level vacuum packaging (WLVP) of uncooled microbolometer detectors. Both pillar and groove type gratings are designed with various topological configurations changing in various period sizes (Λ) from 1.0 μm to 2.

Immune responses elicited by the recombinant Erp, HspR, LppX, MmaA4, and OmpA proteins from in mice.

Immunogenic potency of the recombinant Erp, HspR, LppX, MmaA4, and OmpA proteins from (MTB), formulated with Montanide ISA 720 VG adjuvant, was evaluated in BALB/c mice for the first time in this study. The five vaccine formulations, adjuvant, and BCG vaccine were subcutaneously injected into mice, and the sera were collected at days 0, 15, 30, 41, and 66. The humoral and cellular immune responses against vaccine formulations were determined by measuring serum IgG and serum interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and interleukin-12 (IL-12) levels, respectively.

Clinical presentation and outcomes in type IV dual left anterior descending artery anomaly.

Type IV dual left anterior descending artery (LAD) anomaly constitutes a rare subset of coronary anomalies in which the anterior and anterolateral wall of the left ventricle is supplied by a short LAD originating from the left coronary artery along with a long LAD that originates from the right sinus of Valsalva. Albeit rare, the angiographic presentation is challenging since the appearance of the short LAD is similar to a total occlusion beyond first few diagonal or septal branches. Here, we present a series of four cases with type IV dual LAD anomaly with different clinical and angiographic presentations.

The present study aimed to examine hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α expression and its association with glucose uptake in invasive breast cancer. In addition, connections between glucose uptake and several other prognostic parameters of breast cancer were studied. Between August 2013 and April 2015, 92 patients with biopsy-diagnosed breast cancer were subjected to F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography.

Accidental ingestion of foreign bodies are a common condition in clinical practice. However, small bowel perforation which dues to ingestion foreign bodies has been rarely seen. In this article, we report a case of small bowel perforation which dues to ingestion foreign body.

A rare cause of acute abdomen: spontaneous common hepatic duct perforation.

Spontaneous extrahepatic bile duct perforation is generally seen in infants. Although rarely seen in adults, it may be seen with fatal bile peritonitis. Therefore, for a patient presenting with acute abdominal symptoms, differential diagnosis must be made with radiological imaging such as abdominal ultrasonography or computed tomography, without any loss of time.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis: A rare cause of intraabdominal free air.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is a rarely seen disease characterized by cysts filled with multiple gases in the wall of the small or large intestine. Many factors have been suggested in the etiology and pathogenesis, including peptic ulcer, pyloric stenosis, and endoscopic trauma. Because various clinical characteristics and symptoms are observed together, diagnosis is generally difficult.

Eyedrop-shaped, modified Limberg transposition flap in the treatment of pilonidal sinus disease.

Background: Pilonidal sinus disease is an inflammatory disease seen in the intergluteal region, which is a commonly encountered problem in surgical practice that mostly affects young people. The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of the modified Limberg flap technique with eyedrop excision in the treatment of pilonidal sinus disease.

Patients: The study population consisted of 91 patients with pilonidal disease in the sacrococcygeal region who underwent operation between June 2010 and December 2012.

Right ventricular geometry and mechanics in patients with obstructive sleep apnea living at high altitude.

Purpose: Repetitive obstruction of larynx during sleep can lead to daytime pulmonary hypertension and alterations in right ventricular morphology and function in a small fraction of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) patients. Environmental effects, particularly high altitude, can modify the effects of OSAS on pulmonary circulation, since altitude-related hypoxia is related with pulmonary vasoconstriction. This potential interaction, however, was not investigated in previous studies.

Minimally invasive surgery using mini anterior incision for thyroid diseases: a prospective cohort study.

Aim: Minimally invasive surgical techniques have attracted interest in all surgical specialties since 1980. Degree of increase in pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) and adaptive responses in right ventricular morphology and mechanics play an important role in the prognosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Three dimensional echocardiography and deformation imaging are recent advancements in echocardiography that allow more through assessment of right ventricle. We aimed to investigate right ventricular geometry and mechanics in a stable COPD population living at moderately high altitude.

Background: Extent of atherosclerotic coronary artery disease in patients with stable angina has important prognostic and therapeutic implications. In current models of plaque evolution, thrombocytes play an important role in plaque growth. Mean platelet volume is a readily obtainable marker that was shown to correlate with platelet aggregability in vitro and increased values were demonstrated after acute vascular events.

Omental torsion with left-sided inguinal hernia: a rare preoperative diagnosis.

Omental torsion is a rare disease. It can be difficult to identify if it is not clinically considered in the preoperative period, and this pathology may lead to an acute abdomen. We present the characteristic computed tomography findings and clinical particulars in a 34-year-old male patient with longstanding left inguinal hernia associated with an extraordinary diagnosis.

Acute aortic regurgitation with myocardial infarction: an important clue for aortic dissection.

Background: Aortic dissection is an important cause of acute chest pain that should be rapidly diagnosed, as mortality increases with each hour this condition is left untreated. The diagnosis can be challenging, especially if concomitant myocardial infarction is present. Echocardiography is an important tool for the differential diagnosis.
