Secondary Hypogammaglobulinemia in Patients with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Receiving Ibrutinib Therapy.

Unlabelled: Secondary hypogammaglobulinemia (SHG) is characterized by a decrease in total serum immunoglobulin (Ig) levels and can lead to immunodeficiency associated with recurrent and severe infections and is a common complication of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). SHG also increases with the treatment of CLL. Ibrutinib is one of these treatments and acts by inhibiting bruton tyrosine kinase.

Background: Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), which degrades tryptophan (Trp) to kynurenine (Kyn), has been demonstrated to contribute to modulation of allergic responses. However, the role of IDO in food allergy has not yet been elucidated.

Study Design: In our prospective, single-center study, 118 patients who underwent elective isolated on-pump CABG surgery were included. Patients were divided into two groups according to the development of postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) as Group 1: Patients who developed POAF, and Group 2: Patients who remained in sinus rhythm.

Obstruction of mechanical mitral valves by preserved posterior leaflet remnants.

We report two cases of mechanical prosthetic mitral valve obstruction caused by remnants of the mitral valve posterior leaflet tissue preserved from the previous surgery. Both patients had rheumatic mitral stenosis causing New York Heart Association class III symptoms prior to mitral valve replacement.

Cardiac tamponade due to left ventricular pseudoaneurysm after aortic valve replacement.

Left ventricular outflow tract pseudoaneurysm is a rare but a potentially lethal complication, mainly after aortic root endocarditis or surgery. Usually, it originates from a dehiscence in the mitral-aortic intervalvular fibrosa and arises posteriorly to the aortic root. We report a rare case of a patient with cardiac tamponade due to left ventricular pseudoaneurysm after aortic valve replacement.

Non-invasive indices for the estimation of the anaerobic threshold of oarsmen.

This study compared four common non-invasive indices with an invasive index for determining the anaerobic threshold (AT) in 22 adult male rowers using a Concept2 rowing ergometer. A criterion-standard progressive incremental test (invasive method) measured blood lactate concentrations to determine the 4 mmol/l threshold (La4-AT) and Dmax AT (Dm-AT). This was compared with three indices obtained by analysis of respiratory gases and one that was based on the heart rate (HR) deflection point (HRDP) all of which used the Conconi test (non-invasive methods).

Influence of custom-made mouth guards on strength, speed and anaerobic performance of taekwondo athletes.

The purpose of this study was to test the influence of custom-made mouth guards on strength and anaerobic performance of taekwondo athletes. The study included 21 (11 male and 10 female) trained subjects participating in taekwondo. Anaerobic power and anaerobic capacity, isokinetic quadriceps and hamstring strength, handgrip strength, isometric lower extremity and back strength, 20 m sprint time, squat and counter movement jumping height were measured in two randomized conditions: with or without custom-made (CM) mouth guards.
