Protective effects induced by the food supplement Fluxonorm® in the lower urinary tract.

Objective: Fluxonorm® is a dietary supplement that includes water-soluble extracts of Solidago virga-aurea, Phyllantus niruri, Epilobium angustifolium, Peumus boldus and Ononis spinosa. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the tolerability and efficacy of Fluxonorm® in improving lower urinary tract symptoms in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in combination with standard of care.

Patients And Methods: Lower urinary tract symptoms can be improved by a marked anti-inflammatory action on the lower urinary tract (irritative symptoms) and/or by an anti-proliferative action (obstructive symptoms) on the prostate.

In Vitro Effects of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles (TiONPs) on Cadmium Chloride (CdCl) Genotoxicity in Human Sperm Cells.

The environmental release of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiONPs) associated with their intensive use has been reported to have a genotoxic effect on male fertility. TiONP is able to bind and transport environmental pollutants, such as cadmium (Cd), modifying their availability and/or toxicity. The aim of this work is to assess the in vitro effect of TiONPs and cadmium interaction in human sperm cells Semen parameters, apoptotic cells, sperm DNA fragmentation, genomic stability and oxidative stress were investigated after sperm incubation in cadmium alone and in combination with TiONPs at different times (15, 30, 45 and 90 min).

In vitro genotoxic effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (n-TiO ) in human sperm cells.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO -NPs) are one of the most widely engineered nanoparticles used. The study has been focused on TiO -NPs genotoxic effects on human spermatozoa in vitro. TiO -NPs are able to cross the blood-testis barrier induced inflammation, cytotoxicity, and gene expression changes that lead to impairment of the male reproductive system.

A Web-Based Platform for People With Memory Problems and Their Caregivers (CAREGIVERSPRO-MMD): Mixed-Methods Evaluation of Usability.

Background: The increasing number of people with dementia (PwD) drives research exploring Web-based support interventions to provide effective care for larger populations. In this concept, a Web-based platform (CAREGIVERSPRO-MMD, 620911) was designed to (1) improve the quality of life for PwD, (2) reduce caregiver burden, (3) reduce the financial costs for care, and (4) reduce administration time for health and social care professionals.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the usability and usefulness of CAREGIVERSPRO-MMD platform for PwD or mild cognitive impairment (MCI), informal caregivers, and health and social care professionals with respect to a wider strategy followed by the project to enhance the user-centered approach.

CAALYX: a new generation of location-based services in healthcare.

Recent advances in mobile positioning systems and telecommunications are providing the technology needed for the development of location-aware tele-care applications. This paper introduces CAALYX--Complete Ambient Assisted Living Experiment, an EU-funded project that aims at increasing older people's autonomy and self-confidence by developing a wearable light device capable of measuring specific vital signs of the elderly, detecting falls and location, and communicating automatically in real-time with his/her care provider in case of an emergency, wherever the older person happens to be, at home or outside.

Effects of individualized memory aids on the conversation of persons with severe dementia: a pilot study.

Bourgeois has shown that use of simple memory aids enhances the quality of conversation of persons with moderate Alzheimer-type dementia. We replicated Bourgeois' intervention with five people with severe dementia (Mini-Mental State Examination scores 0-4) and diagnoses of Alzheimer-type or vascular dementia, and evaluated the impact of the aids on the proportion of time participants spent on topic in conversation with carers. For three participants, use of the memory aid did not increase the proportion of time-spent on-topic.
