Educational intervention in first aid for early childhood education professional: a quasi-experimental study.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of a first aid educational intervention on the aptitude, knowledge, and practices of professionals in early childhood education.

Method: Quasi-experimental study of the pre and post-test type carried out in the brazilian municipality of Três Lagoas, MS. It was developed in three stages: 1) application of an online instrument to assess aptitude, knowledge, and practices about situations that require first aid; 2) educational intervention, with four theoretical meetings online and a face-to-face meeting with practical training; 3) reapplying the questionnaire.

Understanding Tinnitus Clinical Care in the Veterans Health Administration and Department of Defense: Overview of Survey Results.

Purpose: In 2021, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and Department of Defense (DOD) Tinnitus Working Group conducted a survey of DOD and VHA clinicians to evaluate clinical services provided for tinnitus.

Method: The online survey included a mix of multiple-choice and open-ended questions. Respondents included VHA and DOD health care providers in audiology, otolaryngology, mental health, and primary care, as well as DOD hearing conservation technicians.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) gene signatures predict outcomes in breast and prostate tumor patients.

Background: Over the last two decades, tumor-derived RNA expression signatures have been developed for the two most commonly diagnosed tumors worldwide, namely prostate and breast tumors, in order to improve both outcome prediction and treatment decision-making. In this context, molecular signatures gained by main components of the tumor microenvironment, such as cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), have been explored as prognostic and therapeutic tools. Nevertheless, a deeper understanding of the significance of CAFs-related gene signatures in breast and prostate cancers still remains to be disclosed.

Battlefield Acupuncture as a Treatment Option for Chronic Tinnitus: A Pilot Study.

Introduction: There is no cure for tinnitus, which is a highly prevalent condition in service members and veterans. Battlefield acupuncture (BFA) can be used to manage pain and stress-related symptoms. We investigated BFA as a safe, low-cost treatment for tinnitus perception and coping in eight chronic tinnitus patients who were followed for 6 months after two BFA treatments to identify changes in tinnitus severity or impact.

Big data analytics and smart cities: applications, challenges, and opportunities.

Urban environments continuously generate larger and larger volumes of data, whose analysis can provide descriptive and predictive models as valuable support to inspire and develop data-driven Smart City applications. To this aim, Big data analysis and machine learning algorithms can play a fundamental role to bring improvements in city policies and urban issues. This paper introduces how Big Data analysis can be exploited to design and develop data-driven smart city services, and provides an overview on the most important Smart City applications, grouped in several categories.

Epidemic forecasting based on mobility patterns: an approach and experimental evaluation on COVID-19 Data.

During an epidemic, decision-makers in public health need accurate predictions of the future case numbers, in order to control the spread of new cases and allow efficient resource planning for hospital needs and capacities. In particular, considering that infectious diseases are spread through human-human transmissions, the analysis of spatio-temporal mobility data can play a fundamental role to enable epidemic forecasting. This paper presents the design and implementation of a predictive approach, based on spatial analysis and regressive models, to discover spatio-temporal predictive epidemic patterns from mobility and infection data.

Is a therapeutic anticoagulation window needed for delivery when using prophylactic low molecular weight heparin during pregnancy? A retrospective monocentric study.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of therapeutic window for delivery for patients under prophylactic anticoagulation by low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) by comparing those who had a planned delivery versus those who delivered spontaneously.

Study Design: This retrospective monocentric study included pregnant patients with prophylactic anticoagulation (one injection per day of enoxaparin 4000UI), who delivered after 24 weeks of gestation. We collected data on pregnancy characteristics and on the delivery.

Introduction: Port insertion is a high-risk period during laparoscopy. The French Gynecologist and Obstetricians College (CNGOF) published recommendations in 2010 to minimize those risks. The aim of our analysis was to establish the accidents' circumstances and consequences and to determine if those incidents could have been depending on whether recommendations had been respected or not.

Prognostic role of translocator protein and oxidative stress markers in chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients treated with bendamustine plus rituximab.

Principally located in the outer mitochondrial membrane, the translocator protein (TSPO) is an 18-kDa transmembrane protein that is a key component of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore. TSPO is associated with a number of biological processes, including apoptosis, the regulation of cellular proliferation, porphyrin transport and heme biosynthesis, immunomodulation, anion transport and the regulation of steroidogenesis. Thus, numerous studies have proposed TSPO as a promising target for novel therapeutic agents, particularly for the treatment of cancer.

Ex vivo behaviour of human bone tumor endothelial cells.

Cooperation between endothelial cells and bone in bone remodelling is well established. In contrast, bone microvasculature supporting the growth of primary tumors and metastasis is poorly understood. Several antiangiogenic agents have recently been undergoing trials, although an extensive body of clinical data and experimental research have proved that angiogenic pathways differ in each tumor type and stage.

Comparison across two generations of prospective models of how the low level of response to alcohol affects alcohol outcomes.

Objective: This article presents the first direct comparison of level of response (LR)-based prospective models in two generations of the same families. To accomplish this, we describe results from the first prospective evaluation of potential mediators of how an earlier low LR to alcohol relates to adverse alcohol outcomes in offspring from the San Diego Prospective Study (SDPS).

Method: To compare with data from probands in the SDPS, new data were gathered from 86 drinking offspring (age ~20 years) during the 25-year follow-up of these families.

Glycoxydation promotes vascular damage via MAPK-ERK/JNK pathways.

Oxidation and glycation enhance foam cell formation via MAPK/JNK in euglycemic and diabetic subjects. Here, we investigated the effects of glycated and oxidized LDL (glc-oxLDL) on MAPK-ERK and JNK signaling pathways using human coronary smooth muscle cells. Glc-oxLDL induced a broad cascade of MAPK/JNK-dependent signaling transduction pathways and the AP-1 complex.

A prospective evaluation of how a low level of response to alcohol predicts later heavy drinking and alcohol problems.

Background And Objectives: Evaluations of how a genetically influenced characteristic, such as the low level of response (a low LR) to alcohol, relates to later heavy drinking and alcohol problems usually include environmental contributors. The best way to understand how LR works in the context of these additional characteristics is to study the process prospectively, but such analyses tend to be complex and the papers are sometimes cluttered with jargon. This report attempts to offer a more straightforward description of the results from such a prospective model of how a lower LR at age 20 relates to alcohol outcomes at age 40.

Risk factors for nosocomial infection in trauma patients.

Several factors are implicated in the increased vulnerability of multiple trauma victims to infection, especially in intensive care-units (ICU). This cohort study was designed to report the incidence, the topography, the etiology and to identify the risk factors for infection in trauma patients admitted in an ICU. From January 2000 to December 2001, 416 trauma patients were admitted to the ICU for more than 24 hours, the mean length of stay was 9.

[Nutritional habits and colon-rectal tumours].

Following a review of the literature, the relationship between diet and the onset of colorectal cancer is analysed starting from the consideration that in Italy about 20,000 people every year from carcinoma of the colon and 50% of these do not survive. The authors proceed to analyse the epidemiological data which point to diet as an aetiological factor in the cancerogenesis of a variety of tumours in spite of the fact that none of the individual nutritional components has been specifically identified as a triggering and/or protective agent, with the exception perhaps of alcohol in the cancer-cirrhosis sequence. They conclude by stating that, while continuing to give the correct importance to integrated surgical, chemo and radio treatment, to prevent the onset of tumours of the large intestine it is useful to associate the support of a complete nutritional education, which should be begun as soon as possible, with the canonical screening techniques.
