Article Synopsis
  • The study examines factors influencing whether older patients (≥65 years) are discharged home or admitted to the hospital after being treated in an emergency department observation unit (EDOU).
  • Data from 5,457 patients were analyzed, identifying five key indicators linked to a higher likelihood of discharge home, including the absence of fever and a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 15.
  • Although a prediction model was developed to assess discharge likelihood, it showed limited accuracy and highlighted the ongoing challenge of individual-level predictions for older patients.

Objective: Functional assessment is part of geriatric assessment. How it is performed in hospital Emergency Departments (ED) is poorly understood, let alone its prognostic value. The aim of this paper was to investigate whether baseline disability to perform basic activities of daily living (BADL) was an independent prognostic factor for death after the index visit to the ED during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and whether it had a different impact on patients with and without diagnosis of COVID-19.

Objectives: To describe the sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidity, and baseline functional status of patients aged 65 or older who came to hospital emergency departments (EDs) during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and to compare them with the findings for an earlier period to analyze factors of the index episode that were related to mortality.

Material And Methods: We studied data from the EDEN-COVID cohort (Emergency Department and Elder Needs During COVID-19) of patients aged 65 years or older treated in 40 Spanish EDs on 7 consecutive days. Nine sociodemographic variables, 18 comorbidities, and 7 function variables were registered and compared with the findings for the EDEN cohort of patients included with the same criteria and treated a year earlier in the same EDs.

This consensus statement was developed to optimize the emergency management of epileptic seizures in prehospital and hospital settings. A list of clinical questions was drafted and the literature on the emergency treatment of epileptic seizures was reviewed by a multidisciplinary team of emergency physicians, neurologists, and pediatric neurologists from 3 associations: the Spanish Epilepsy Society (SEEP), the Spanish Society of Emergency Medicine (SEMES), and the Spanish Neurology Society (SEN). The team members first answered the questions individually and then discussed them during a meeting of experts from the 3 associations, to reach consensus on the content of the present statement.

Chemical Submission (CS) is considered a danger to health and a form of violence. There are different forms of proactive CS (involuntary consumption of psychoactive substances) and opportunistic CS (voluntary consumption), with criminal intent, usually theft, submission, or sexual assault. The objective of this work is to describe the characteristics of cases of suspected CS in adults older than 65 years treated in the Emergency Department of the San Carlos Clinical Hospital and the results of the toxicological analysis performed by the INTCF in Madrid (April 1, 2015-2019).
