Method: qualitative research with theoretical saturation through analysis of the ninth nondirected interview of elderly who underwent such experience. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed according to Grounded Theory.

Subcutaneous Immunotherapy Improves the Symptomatology of Allergic Rhinitis.

Introduction The relevance of allergic rhinitis is unquestionable. This condition affects people's quality of life and its incidence has increased over the last years. Objective Thus, this study aims to analyze the effectiveness of subcutaneous injectable immunotherapy in cases of nasal itching, sneeze, rhinorrhea and nasal congestion in allergic rhinitis patients.

Hepatectomy and liver regeneration: from experimental research to clinical application.

Background: The mechanisms and kinetics of hepatic growth have continuously been investigated. This study concerns liver regeneration in animal and patients who underwent partial hepatectomy evaluated by the hepatic extraction fraction (HEF) calculated through radioisotopic methods.

Methods: Thirty normal Wistar rats were submitted to an 85% hepatectomy, and 95 patients with primary and secondary liver tumours were included.

Haemoptysis and left upper quadrant abdominal pain: an unusual presentation of partial thoracic migration of an adjustable gastric band's tube.

Laparoscopic gastric banding is considered the safest bariatric procedure, holding satisfactory long-term weight loss results, low rates of early complications and negligible mortality. Long-term follow-up are showing a high prevalence of late complications. We describe the case of a 40-year-old female patient, with a medical history of laparoscopic gastric banding, admitted in the emergency department complaining of haemoptysis, left upper quadrant abdominal pain and a slight tachycardia.

Morphological alterations in the prostate stroma of rats submitted to chronic nicotine treatment.

The stroma plays a fundamental role in the function of different glandular systems. In the prostate, the stroma is responsible for the development and maintenance of the differentiated state of the epithelium. Nicotine induces tobacco dependence and promotes morphological alterations in the epithelial compartment.

TRREMS procedure (transanal repair of rectocele and rectal mucosectomy with one circular stapler): a prospective multicenter trial.

Context: Since anorectocele is usually associated with mucosa prolapse and/or rectal intussusceptions, it was developed a stapled surgical technique using one circular stapler.

Objective: To report the results of Transanal Repair of Rectocele and Rectal Mucosectomy with one Circular Stapler (TRREMS procedure) in the treatment of anorectocele with mucosa prolapse in a prospective multicenter trial.

Methods: It was conducted by 14 surgeons and included 75 female patients, mean aged 49.

Epithelial-stromal interactions in salivary glands of rats exposed to chronic passive smoking.

Objectives: Cigarette smoke leads to precancerous and cancerous lesions in the mouth even when the exposure is passive. The salivary glands are amongst the tissues exposed to the smoke but it is unclear whether or not passive cigarette exposure is related to detectable changes in these tissues. The objective of this study was to observe the tissue architecture of the parotid and submandibular glands in rats after passive cigarette exposure and to measure any changes that occurred.

[The impact of selective clamping of portal vein in hepatocellular function. An experimental study].

Unlabelled: The influence of selective clamping of the elements of hepatic pedicle in the hepatocellular function and viability were evaluated in our department.

Aim: Study the effect of selective clamping of the portal vein (CPV) in hepatocellular function in an animal model with normal liver.

Method: Three groups of Wistar rats (males, 2 months) were subjected a CPV for 60 min: group A (n=21) submitted to a continuous inflow occlusion; group B (n=12) underwent to a CPV for 30 min with 5 min of reperfusion; group C (n=10) underwent a CPV for 15 min with 5 min of reperfusion.

Value of MELD and MELD-based indices in surgical risk evaluation of cirrhotic patients: retrospective analysis of 190 cases.

Background: Recent studies have suggested that the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) may represent a promising alternative to the Child-Turcotte-Pugh classification as a predictive factor of operative mortality and morbidity. This study was designed to evaluate the value of MELD and four MELD-based indices (iMELD: integrated MELD; MESO: MELD to sodium ratio; MELD-Na: MELD with incorporation of sodium; MELD-XI: MELD excluding the International Normalized Ratio) in the quantification of surgical risk for patients with cirrhosis and compare its prognostic value with the Child-Turcotte-Pugh classification and two derived scores (proposed by Huo and Giannini, respectively).

Methods: A retrospective study of 190 patients with cirrhosis, operated on in our department between 1993 and 2008, was undertaken.

[Analysis of nursing records in a surgical ward of a public teaching hospital].

This article presents a systematic descriptive and retrospective study on nursing notes on patients admitted to the surgical ward of a teaching hospital in Londrina, Paraná, Brazil, which aimed at their systematic analisys. Results show that the largest number of notes was made during the morning shift, and most of them were made by nurse auxiliaries. As to basic needs, psychobiological records were the most frequent, whereas there no psychospiritual records were found.

Experimental alcoholism and pathogenesis of prostatic diseases in UChB rats.

Previous studies have shown that long-term alcohol treatment has negative effects on prostatic stromal-epithelial interaction. Thus, the aim of the present study was to analyze the histochemical, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural alterations that occur in the prostatic stroma and epithelium of rats submitted to chronic alcohol ingestion and alcohol abstinence, as well as to establish the relationship between these changes and prostatic diseases. Thirty male rats (10 Wistar and 20 UChB rats) were divided into three experimental groups: the control group received tap water, the alcoholic group received ethanol diluted to 10 degrees G.

Morphological alterations in the epithelium of the oral mucosa of rats (Rattus norvegicus) submitted to long-term systemic nicotine treatment.

Smoking is considered to be the most albeit preventable cause of diseases and premature deaths in the history of mankind. The local action of tobacco on the oral mucosa can cause precancerous and cancerous lesions. However, there is not enough evidence to establish all the systemic effects caused by nicotine on the organism.
