Concerns about methane (CH) emissions from rice, a staple sustaining over 3.5 billion people globally, are heightened due to its status as the second-largest contributor to greenhouse gases, driving climate change. Accurate quantification of CH emissions from rice fields is crucial for understanding gas concentrations.

Article Synopsis
  • Planted forests play a vital role in combating climate change and provide essential timber, non-timber products, and ecosystem services, with East Asia housing about 36% of these forests globally.
  • Despite their significance, detailed information on the geographic distribution and tree species composition of these forests has been lacking.
  • This study presents the first comprehensive spatial database of planted forests in East Asia, highlighting that China contributes 87% of the predicted 948,863 km² area, and offers accurate maps that enhance understanding of these forests' contributions to climate change mitigation and inform conservation strategies.

Language impairments are frequent, severe, and of prognostic value in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Unfortunately, the evaluation of the efficacy of treatments targeting the language skills of those with ASD continues to be hindered by a lack of psychometrically sound outcome measures. Expressive Language Sampling (ELS) procedures offer a promising alternative to norm-referenced standardized tests for assessing expressive language in treatment studies.

There is a need for psychometrically sound outcome measures for treatment studies that have a low burden for families and that are available in multiple languages. We have developed a language assessment in English and Spanish that parents can administer to their children at home via telehealth-delivered procedures. The current case study presents descriptive data on a single family of two parent-child dyads.

Aim: To determine the prevalence of drug and substance abuse among high school students in Jalisco and its association with the severity of health, behavior and psychosocial problems in order to provide evidence for possible prevention and treatment needs.

Methods: A multi-stage random sample of Jalisco high school students was given a paper-and-pencil survey based upon an adapted version of the drug use screening inventory (DUSI) ( = 24699; = 2832). The DUSI showed adequate psychometric characteristics in this population.

Introduction: Inflammatory pseudotumor (IP) is an uncommon benign neoplasm. It was first described in the lung but it has been recognized in several somatic and visceral locations. Mesenteric presentation is rare and its clinical presentation is variable but patients can be completely asymptomatic.

The approval of the current Bathing Water Directive (Directive 2006/7/EC) set the necessity to define the bathing water profile. The goals established in the definition of the profile are: (i) to know the processes that determine the concentration of bacteriological indicators in the aquatic environment, (ii) to obtain relationships between the cause of pollution and its effects, and (iii) to evaluate the fulfilment of the Directive and to set the Quality Monitoring and Assessment Program, according to the bacteriological characteristics of the bathing water. In this paper an approach to elaborate the bathing water profile and its application to several bathing waters located in Santander municipality (North Spain) is shown.

Data on the 95th and 90th percentiles of bacteriological quality indicators are used to classify bathing waters in Europe, according to the requirements of Directive 2006/7/EC. However, percentile values and consequently, classification of bathing waters depend both on sampling effort and sample-size, which may undermine an appropriate assessment of bathing water classification. To analyse the influence of sampling effort and sample size on water classification, a bootstrap approach was applied to 55 bacteriological quality datasets of several beaches in the Balearic Islands (Spain).

Since the flushing time is a physical descriptor used to distinguish between different types of heavily modified water bodies (HMWB), the establishment of a methodology for its calculation becomes important. In order to achieve this task, a methodological procedure involving the tide mean value and variable river flow values is proposed. The hydrodynamics were assessed using a two-dimensional model which integrates the depth-averaged mass and momentum equations in the time and space domains and includes a wet-dry point treatment method.

Background: Many patients with acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) have had recent healthcare interventions prior to developing ALI/ARDS.

Objective: To determine the timing of ALI/ARDS onset in relation to hospital admission and other healthcare interventions.

Methods: We conducted a population-based observational cohort study with a validated electronic surveillance tool, and identified patients with possible ALI/ARDS among critically ill adults at Mayo Clinic hospitals that provide critical care services for Olmsted County, Minnesota, in 2006.

Background: Twin studies suggest that genetic factors account for 40-60% of the variance in alcohol dependence. It has been stated that different drug dependencies may have unique genetic influences. Alterations in serotonin availability and function can affect drinking behaviour.

The HIF-1alpha protein plays a key role in the cellular response to hypoxia via transcriptional regulation of genes involved in erythropoiesis, angiogenesis, and metabolism. Overexpression of HIF-1alpha is commonly found in solid tumors in significant association with increased patient mortality and resistance to therapy. The predominant mode of HIF-1alpha regulation by hypoxia occurs at the level of protein stability.

Background: To date, research examining the relationship between serotonergic genes and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has yielded conflicting results. The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between four serotonergic polymorphisms (STin2 VNTR and 5-HTTLPR of the SLC6A4 gene, and A-1438G (rs6311) and T102C (rs6313) of the HTR2A gene) and OCD.

Methods: 99 OCD patients, 456 non-OCD psychiatric patients, and 420 healthy controls from a homogeneous Spanish Caucasian population were genotyped using standard methods.

Objective: Tumors arising from different sites of the head and neck area have very different clinical behavior. Loss or reduction of expression of adhesion molecules has been assumed to play a critical role in the development of head and neck carcinomas. The aim of this study is to determine if there are differences in the expression of adhesion molecules E-cadherin, CD44s, and CD44v6 in pharyngeal and laryngeal squamous-cell carcinomas.

CD44 splice variants are assumed to have a critical role in the malignant progression of many human tumors. However, the clinical significance of CD44 expression is not yet understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic significance of expression of CD44s and CD44v6 isoforms in squamous cell carcinomas of the supraglottic larynx.
