Our aim was to determine if salt and stress enhance Helicobacter pylori (Hp) lesions in Meriones unguiculatus. Two hundred seventy-eight pathogen-free gerbils were allocated to seven groups: Hp-Sydney strain (45), 8% higher-salt diet (38), stress (60% space reduction/water immersion; 36), Hp + salt (33), Hp + stress (34), N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (34), and sham (58). Gerbils were sacrificed at 1 week (67), 12 weeks (73), 52 weeks (65), and 68 weeks (73).

Cervical cancer: a qualitative study on subjectivity, family, gender and health services.

Background: In 2002, cervical cancer was one of the leading causes of death in Mexico. Quantitative techniques allowed for the identification of socioeconomic, behavioral and biological characteristics that are part of its etiology. However such characteristics, are inadequate to explain sufficiently the role that emotions, family networks and socially-constructed categories such as gender play in the demand and utilization of health services for cervical cancer diagnosis and treatment and neither the timely undertaking of preventive actions, such as getting a PAP smear or seeking adequate and continuous treatment.

[Spanish recommendations for proper use of enfuvirtide].

Enfuvirtide is a high-cost, parenterally administered drug commonly used in late phases of HIV infection, when its efficacy may be compromised. To optimize enfuvirtide use, consensus recommendations for this purpose have been formulated by 247 physicians attending patients with HIV infection in Spain. A literature review was performed in which grades of evidence and recommendations were defined according to the origin of the data (randomized clinical trials, non-randomized studies, expert opinion).

Characterization of offensive responses during the maturation of play-fighting into aggression in male golden hamsters.

In hamsters, the maturation of aggression during puberty is associated with a gradual reduction of offensive responses. The purpose of this study was to analyze the changes during this decrease to provide an enhanced description of the behavior. During early puberty, play-fighting is characterized by long and continuous contact duration throughout the encounter and repetitive attacks within bouts of agonistic interaction.

Moreover, some epidemiological and clinical differences between younger and older HIV-infected individuals have been observed. However, since introduction of HAART therapy, there are controversial results regarding their response to HAART.

HS-SPME determination of volatile carbonyl and carboxylic compounds in different matrices.

Specific chromatographic methodologies are developed for the analysis of carboxylic acids (C(2)-C(6), benzoic) and aldehydes (C(2)-C(10)) of low molecular weight in diverse matrices, such as air, automotive exhaust gases, human breath, and aqueous matrices. For carboxylic acids, the method is based on their reaction with pentafluorobenzyl bromide in aqueous solution, followed by the separation and identification of the resultant pentafluorobenzyl esters by means of headspace (HS)-solid-phase microextraction (SPME) combined with gas chromatography (GC) and electron capture detection (ECD). Results of a study of prolonging treatment with pegylated interferon-alpha2a plus ribavirin in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients with no early virological response.

Objective: To assess the efficacy and safety of an extended treatment period in HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV)-coinfected patients without early virological response (EVR).

Methods: Patients received pegylated interferon (peg-INF)-alpha2a 180 microg/week plus ribavirin 800 mg/d for 12 weeks. Patients achieving EVR at week 12 continued under therapy for an additional 12 or 36 weeks depending on genotype.

Control of giant pulse duration in neodymium minilasers with controllable cavity length and pulsed pumping.

In a solid-state laser incident on a LiNdP4O12 crystal, pumped by a short light pulse, giant pulse oscillation without the use of resonator Q switching is realized. Tuning of the oscillation pulse duration from 2 up to 20 ns is achieved by changing the cavity length from 24 to 3 mm, respectively. Our analysis of this mode of laser radiation is made on the basis of the rate equations.

The macronucleus of the binucleate ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila contains fragmented and amplified chromosomes that do not have centromeres, eliminating the possibility of mitotic nuclear division. Instead, the macronucleus divides by amitosis with random segregation of these chromosomes without detectable chromatin condensation. This amitotic division provides a special opportunity for studying the roles of mitotic proteins in segregating acentric chromatin.

Long-term safety and efficacy of nevirapine-based approaches in HIV type 1-infected patients.

Using a multicenter, cross-sectional, observation study, the long-term safety, metabolic profile, and viral efficacy of nevirapine (NVP)-based approaches in HIV-1-infected patients treated for at least 2 years were assessed. For 4 months, all consecutive HIV-1-infected patients who had been receiving an NVP-containing regimen for at least 2 years were recruited. A total of 613 patients were included with a median follow-up period of 43 months (IQR: 31-51).

Use of fluorogestone acetate after breeding to reduce the effect of premature luteal regression in dairy goats when superovulation is induced with FSH.

The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of fluorogestone acetate (FGA) administered after mating, on embryo production in the dairy goat subjected to conventional superovulatory and embryo recovery protocols. Adult does, most of them of the French Alpine breed, were randomly assigned after a FSH-superovulatory estrus and fertile matings to a control group (n=20) or to a treated group (n=20) in which intravaginal sponges impregnated with FGA were inserted after mating and remove before embryo collection (day 6). Blood samples were collected every 12h from days 1 to 7 post-estrus and serum progesterone concentrations were determined.

The CNA1 histone of the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila is essential for chromosome segregation in the germline micronucleus.

Ciliated protozoans present several features of chromosome segregation that are unique among eukaryotes, including their maintenance of two nuclei: a germline micronucleus, which undergoes conventional mitosis and meiosis, and a somatic macronucleus that divides by an amitotic process. To study ciliate chromosome segregation, we have identified the centromeric histone gene in the Tetrahymena thermophila genome (CNA1). CNA1p specifically localizes to peripheral centromeres in the micronucleus but is absent in the macronucleus during vegetative growth.

Lead exposure alters the development of agonistic behavior in golden hamsters.

We tested the effects of exposure to different doses of lead acetate (either 0, 25, 100, or 400 ppm) on the development of aggressive behavior in male golden hamsters. Pups were tested for offensive responses across puberty, as they were maturing from play fighting to adult aggression. Our data show a dose-specific effect of lead exposure on the development of aggression during puberty at doses resulting in blood levels well below 20 microg/dl.

Effect of phytase supplementation to a low- and a high-phytate diet for growing pigs on the digestibilities of crude protein, amino acids, and energy.

Supplementation of microbial phytase usually improves the digestibility and utilization of phosphorus in feedstuffs of plant origin. The effect of phytase supplementation on the digestibilities of AA also has been examined, but the results have been inconsistent. This study was carried out to determine the effect of phytase (Natuphos) supplementation, at a rate of 2,000 phytase units/kg, to two basal diets on the apparent ileal digestibilities (AID) of GE, CP, and AA, and on the apparent total-tract digestibilities (ATTD) of CP and GE.

Active infectious endocarditis: postoperative outcome.

Objective: Many changes have occurred in the natural history and the management of active infectious endocarditis (AIE) in recent years. Therefore, the records of patients admitted in a tertiary care specialized hospital presenting with the Duke criteria were reviewed.

Methods: Adults operated on to treat AIE were included during a 3-year period.

Progesterone is neuroprotective in models of focal or global ischemia when treatment starts either before the insult or at the onset of reperfusion. In these cases the steroid may act during the occurrence of the early pathophysiological events triggered by ischemia or reperfusion. As opposed to this condition, the aim of the present study was to assess the effect of delayed, post-injury administration of progesterone on the preservation of pyramidal neurons of the hippocampus of rats 21 days after been exposed to global ischemia by the four vessel occlusion model.

Spines-mediated synaptic activity has been associated to learning ability. Dendritic spines from hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons of proestrus rats have been reported to be more numerous than in estrus animals, but some behavioral studies have reported a better performance during the estrus stage of the estrous cycle. Because spine shape has been shown to be strongly related to the post-synaptic processing of information, a quantitative morphological study related to the proportional density of each type of spine, was conducted in Golgi material of hippocampal CA1 pyramidal cells of proestrus and estrus rats.

[Clinical and epidemiological study of a series of HIV-infected patients over 50 years old].

Introduction: The epidemiology of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has changed in recent years. Cases in persons over the age of 50 have increased, and the most frequent mode of transmission is sexual contact. The objective of this study is to analyse the epidemiological, clinical and evolution characteristics of a clinical series of HIV-infected patients over 50 years old at the time of diagnosis.

Effect of phytase supplementation to diets for weanling pigs on the digestibilities of crude protein, amino acids, and energy.

Four experiments were conducted with weanling pigs fitted with a simple T-cannula at the distal ileum, to determine the effect of phytase supplementation to four diets on the apparent ileal digestibilities (AID) of CP and AA, and the apparent total-tract digestibilities (ATTD) of CP and DE. Cytokines, such as interferons (IFN), underlie many immunological functions and are increasingly implicated in disease-related symptoms and pathology. In order to study the potential roles of IFN alpha and its antagonists in autoimmune phenomena, the sera from 89 patients (aged 15-95 years, 65 females) diagnosed as having myasthenia gravis (MG) (2 months to 34 years duration) were tested for the presence of natural anti-IFN alpha-2b auto-antibodies. Sera were screened for anti-IFN alpha-2b by a sandwich-type enzyme immunoassay system.

A neural network underlying individual differences in emotion and aggression in male golden hamsters.

In rodents, aggressive behavior can be altered by experimental manipulations of emotional responsiveness. The goal of this study was to identify characteristics of emotional reactivity associated with individual differences in aggressive behavior and their integration within a common neural network. Male golden hamsters were first screened for offensive aggression.

QT prolongation and Torsades de Pointes in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus and treated with methadone.

Four patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus receiving antiretroviral treatment and high doses of methadone (>200 mg/day) presented with several syncopal episodes. A significant prolongation of the QTc interval was detected in all of them, and in 3 patients, > or =1 episode of Torsades de Pointes was recorded. The sequence of events in these cases suggests that high doses of methadone caused QT prolongation and provided the substrate for syncope and Torsades de Pointes.
