Purpose: Ultracongruent (UC) inserts were designed to overcome potential issues with posterior stabilized (PS) inserts, including bone resection, post-breakage, and patellar clunk syndrome. However, there remains a shortage of high-quality studies directly comparing this insert design to the established PS Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA). This prospective randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed to compare clinical outcomes, range of motion, and complications of UC and PS TKA.

The lack of synthesized information regarding biodiversity is a major problem among researchers, leading to a pervasive cycle where ecologists make field campaigns to collect information that already exists and yet has not been made available for a broader audience. This problem leads to long-lasting effects in public policies such as spending money multiple times to conduct similar studies in the same area. We aim to identify this knowledge gap by synthesizing information available regarding two Brazilian long-term biodiversity programs and the metadata generated by them.

Introduction: Schizophrenia is a debilitating disorder that affects a significant proportion of the population and leads to impaired functionality and long-term challenges. The first episode of psychosis (FEP) is a critical intervention stage for improving long-term outcomes. The GAPi program was established in São Paulo, Brazil to provide early intervention services and evaluate biomarkers in individuals with FEP.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticle using pollen extract from Tetragonisca angustula a stingless bee.

This study explores the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using a methanolic extract of fermented pollen from Tetragonisca angustula, a species of stingless bees. The AgNPs exhibit spherical morphology, low charge values, and suspension stability, with their unique composition attributed to elements from the pollen extract. Antioxidant assays show comparable activity between the pollen extract and AgNPs, emphasizing the retention of antioxidant effects.

Dysphagia in Open Partial Horizontal Laryngectomy Type IIa: Quantitative Analysis of Videofluoroscopy using the ASPEKT Method.

Open Partial Horizontal Laryngectomy (OPHL) Type IIa surgery is a conservative surgical technique used in the treatment of laryngeal carcinomas. In this pilot study, we aimed to characterize swallowing function and physiology in a series of patients after OPHL Type IIa surgery through comparison to healthy reference values for quantitative measures for videofluoroscopy. We performed retrospective quantitative analysis of videofluoroscopy recordings of thin liquid swallows for a preliminary sample of 10 male patients.

A Minimally Invasive Model of Aortic Stenosis in Swine.

Large animal models of heart failure play an essential role in the development of new therapeutic interventions due to their size and physiological similarities to humans. Efforts have been dedicated to creating a model of pressure-overload induced heart failure, and ascending aortic banding while still supra-coronary and not a perfect mimic of aortic stenosis in humans, closely resembling the human condition. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate a minimally invasive approach to induce left ventricular pressure overload by placing an aortic band, precisely calibrated with percutaneously introduced high-fidelity pressure sensors.

Treatment resistance in schizophrenia: a meta-analysis of prevalence and correlates.

Objectives: To determine the prevalence and correlates of treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) through a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Methods: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria, an electronic search was performed in PubMed and Embase through May 17, 2022. All study designs that assessed a minimum of 20 schizophrenia-spectrum patients and provided data on TRS prevalence or allowed its calculation were included.

Background: Human umbilical cord matrix-mesenchymal stromal cells (hUCM-MSC) have demonstrated beneficial effects in experimental acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Reperfusion injury hampers myocardial recovery in a clinical setting and its management is an unmet need. We investigated the efficacy of intracoronary (IC) delivery of xenogeneic hUCM-MSC as reperfusion-adjuvant therapy in a translational model of AMI in swine.

Collagenous sprue is a rare and unrecognized cause of diarrhea and weight loss, mainly affecting the duodenum and small bowel. The clinical picture often resembles that of coeliac sprue, the main differential diagnosis, albeit, being refractory to a gluten-free diet. The histological features are fundamentally characterized by the deposition of collagen beneath the basement membrane of gut mucosa.

Challenges and Insights From Treating Psychotic Disorders During COVID-19 Pandemic in Brazil.

The COVID-19 pandemic mainly affected the most vulnerable individuals. Among those, patients with schizophrenia especially suffered from unexpected changes in their routines, barriers to treatment, and distress-related events. We conducted a narrative review using all available sources of information to describe the challenges faced by schizophrenia patients and their families in Brazil, including the strategies that have been adopted to tackle them.

Pediatric Lisfranc Fracture-Dislocation: A Case Report.

Lisfranc injury is extremely rare in the pediatric population and little evidence exists to guide the treatment at this age. We present a clinical case of a rare Lisfranc fracture-dislocation at pediatric age. An 11-year-old male was admitted to the emergency department, in October 2020, after a motorcycle incident.

Background: It is particularly difficult to choose the appropriate prosthesis to treat infective endocarditis.

Objectives: To investigate the outcomes after aortic valve replacement with a stented bioprosthesis (Trifecta) in patients with active or previous infective endocarditis.

Methods: We performed a single-centre, retrospective study including consecutive patients with infective endocarditis who underwent aortic valve replacement between July 2011 and June 2019.

Basic principles of cardiothoracic surgery training: a position paper by the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery Residents Committee.

Objectives: Across Europe there are significant variations in the fundamental structure and content of cardiothoracic surgery (CTS) training programmes. Previous efforts have been made to introduce a Unified European Training System, which outlined the fundamentals of the ideal programme and supported a paradigm shift from an apprenticeship to a competency-based model. This article's goal was to define key structural, administrative and executive details of such a programme to lay the foundations for the standardization of cardiothoracic surgical training across Europe.

Objective: To describe cervical cancer (CC) prevention and control strategies in the primary care setting in South America.

Method: Two review steps were performed: review of documents published in governmental websites in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela; and systematic review of the literature available in LILACS, MEDLINE, Scopus, SciELO, and Science Direct databases.

Results: Twenty-one institutional documents (plans, practice guides, and national guidelines) and 25 journal articles were included.

Is there a place for dietetic interventions in adult ADHD?

Current treatments for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adults are limited by lack of response and side effects in about one third of the individuals. Changes towards a healthier lifestyle could have a positive impact beyond the relief of specific symptoms. However, it is not clear if nutritional interventions influence mental health and cognition.

Differences of affective and non-affective psychoses in early intervention services from Latin America.

Background: Psychosis presentation can be affected by genetic and environmental factors. Differentiating between affective and non-affective psychosis (A-FEP and NA-FEP, respectively) may influence treatment decisions and clinical outcomes. The objective of this paper is to examine differences between patients with A-FEP or NA-FEP in a Latin American sample.
