Introduction Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is a common procedure used for the treatment of different pathologies caused by gallstones in the gallbladder, and one of the most common indications is acute cholecystitis. The definitive treatment for acute cholecystitis is surgery, and LC is the gold standard. Nevertheless, transoperative complications (like intraoperative bleeding, anatomical abnormalities of the gallbladder, etc.

Background: Anal fistula treatment aims to eradicate the fistula, preserve the sphincter, prevent recurrence, and allow an early return to daily activities for the patient. Because of the difficulty of achieving these goals, stem cell-based therapy has emerged for the treatment of complex perianal fistula with promising results.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of complex anal fistula in patients without Crohn's disease.

Background: Dyslipidaemias result from the interaction between genetic and environmental factors, including diet disequilibrium and physical inactivity. Among the genetic factors associated with serum lipids, the Taq1B CETP polymorphism has been investigated. The B1 allele has been considered as a risk factor for dyslipidaemia because of its association with greater CETP levels and higher serum triglycerides.

Cholecystectomy is the only definitive management of pancreatitis secondary to gallstone disease. Approximately 20% to 30% of patients with acute biliary pancreatitis (ABP) will have persistent common bile duct (CBD) stones. Therefore, choosing a method for the early diagnosis of choledocholithiasis is essential to reduce waiting days for surgery and hospital stay in these patients.

Background: There is limited information about the factors related with the development of long-term permanent work disability (PWD) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated with a combination of conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (cs-DMARDs).

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate incidence and factors associated with the development of PWD in RA treated with combination therapy using conventional synthetic cs-DMARDs.

Methods: We assessed in multivariate models the effect of clinical and demographic factors in the development of PWD in a long-term retrospective cohort of 180 workers with RA who were treated with a combination of cs-DMARDs.

Introduction: Gallstone ileus represents 4% of the causes of bowel obstruction in the general population, but increases to 25% in patients above the age of 65 years. Gallstone ileus does not present with unique symptoms, making diagnosis difficult. Its management is surgical, but there is no consensus as to which of the different surgical techniques is the procedure of choice.

Introduction: The Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract present in approximately 1-4% of the population; the MD duplication is exceedingly rare with only a few reports of it. Here we present the firs case of a strangulated Littre's hernia with MD duplication.

Presentation Of Case: A 30-year-old male presented to the emergency room with clinical signs of small bowel obstruction, at physical examination, a right incarcerated inguinal hernia with erythema was found.

Objectives: To compare bone turnover marker (BTM) levels and bone mineral density (BMD) between patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and healthy controls (HC) and to evaluate, in AS, the association between BTM levels and clinical variables, spinal syndesmophytes, and BMD using multivariate analysis.

Method: Seventy-eight AS patients were compared with 58 HC matched by gender. Spinal syndesmophytes in AS and other characteristics were assessed.

Article Synopsis
  • Mexico has a high prevalence of overweight and obesity, and laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) is a recommended surgical option for acute appendicitis (AA), but local evidence is lacking.
  • A study included 27 patients (5 overweight and 22 obese) who underwent LA, showing no need for surgical conversion and an overall complication rate of 29.6%, primarily mild.
  • The findings suggest that outcomes of LA for obese adults with AA in Mexico are comparable to those observed in other countries, indicating its effectiveness in this population.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of anti-TNF agents plus synthetic disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) versus DMARDs alone for ankylosing spondylitis (AS) with reduced pulmonary function vital capacity (FVC%).

Methods: In an observational study, we included AS who had FVC% <80% at baseline. Twenty patients were taking DMARDs and 16 received anti-TNF + DMARDs.

To evaluate the association between pulmonary function and clinical variables in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and to compare the pulmonary function of patients with AS with that of healthy controls, 61 AS patients and 74 healthy controls were included. In AS, we assessed clinical disease indices (BASDAI, BASFI, BASG), morning stiffness, number of hypersensitive entheses, metrology measures, 6-min walking test, acute phase reactants, radiological presence of "bamboo spine," and severity of radiological involvement in sacroiliac and vertebral joints. AS and healthy controls had similar age and gender.
