This study presents a new approach towards the production of sol-gel silica-coated BiO/GdO cement additives towards the improvement of early mechanical performance and radiation attenuation. Two types of silica coatings, which varied in synthesis method and morphology, were used to coat BiO/GdO structures and evaluated as a cement filler in Portland cement pastes. Isothermal calorimetry studies and early strength evaluations confirmed that both proposed coating types can overcome retarded cement hydration process, attributed to BiO presence, resulting in improved one day compressive strength by 300% and 251% (depending on coating method) when compared to paste containing pristine BiO and GdO particles.

Phyllodes tumors of the breast are rare fibroepithelial neoplasms that account for less than 1% of all breast tumors. They tend to affect middle-aged women, who present with a rapidly growing, palpable mass. Here we present a case of a 34-year-old female surrogate mother without any reported personal or family history of breast cancer who presented with a rapidly growing left breast mass, pathologically proven to be a phyllodes tumor.

Germ cell tumors are the most common nonhematologic malignancy of young men which often present with metastasis to the retroperitoneum, however a primary retroperitoneal mass should also be considered. The case presented herein reports a 42-year-old male presenting with a massive heterogenous retroperitoneal mass determined to be a mature cystic teratoma. Further investigation revealed a multifocal right testicular mass containing both a viable pure seminoma and a fibrous scar demonstrating germ cell neoplasia in situ thus representing the rare phenomenon of a "burned-out" mixed germ cell testicular tumor.

In this study, the core-shell silica nanospheres modified with titanium dioxide were tested in the photocatalytic decomposition of dyes. The presented data underlines the advantages and shortcomings in the potential application of silica-based catalysts to neutralize organic pollutants. During the photocatalytic reaction in distilled water, catalysts showed decreased efficiency due to a carbon layer deposited on its surface.

Electrodes from carbonized Zn₄O(1,4-benzodicarboxylic acid) (MOF-5) structures were prepared successfully via evaporating the solvent with a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) binder. The solvent used for a nanocomposite cast was easily removed.
