Article Synopsis
  • Varicose veins should be understood as part of the larger issue of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), prompting the MEVeC project to enhance assessment methods and standardize treatment evaluations across practitioners.
  • The study evaluated surgical vs. laser treatment in patients with specific varicose vein conditions, using ultrasound Doppler to examine outcomes after interventions.
  • Results showed lower reflux rates in the surgical group compared to the laser group, highlighting the need for ongoing standardization and understanding of treatment efficacy in managing CVI.

Introduction: Background The aim of the paper is related to our experience defining the diagnostic accuracy of breast elastosonog-raphy.

Objective: The aim of our study is therefore to define the diagnostic accuracy of breast elastosonography in the differential diagnosis of nodular breast neoformations to improve the characterization of the solid lesion and reduce the number of needle aspiration unnecessary for benign formations.

Material And Methods: A total of 88 patients were enrolled, who came to the Department with an ultrasound diagnosis of a breast lesion.

Background: The aim of the present work was to evaluate the prognostic significance in patients with T1 breast cancer of tissue expression of the two oncosuppressors phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) and non-metastatic clone 23 (NM23) as detected by immunohistochemistry.

Materials And Methods: We prospectively analyzed 62 patients who underwent surgery for a T1 stage breast cancer. Expression of PTEN and NM23 was tested for correlation with clinical characteristics and clinical outcome.

Background/aim: Leptin is a small hormone of protein nature, it is strongly involved in the regulation of lipid metabolism and its functioning mechanism is not yet well known or whether or not it is actually secreted by cholangiocytes, nor if the biliary tree expresses its receptors. In the past, various studies have tried to correlate leptin levels with certain neoplasms. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that serum leptin values can become a new sensitive and specific serum marker for cholangiocarcinoma.

Standard open repair of true or false aneurysms of the aortic arch usually require cardiopulmonary bypass, hypothermia and circulatory arrest, associated with increased mortality and morbidity rates. Thus, an alternative strategy that avoids cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and hypothermic circulatory arrest would benefit the patient. Endovascular stent-grafting has developed as a safe and effective treatment for descending aortic pathologies.

Background: Our intention in this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a new open mesh hernia repair procedure, the "All in One Mesh Hernioplasty", for the treatment of primary inguinal hernias in adults.

Methods: Between February 2014 and February 2016, we performed the All In One Mesh Hernioplasty procedure on 400 patient suffering from primary unilateral inguinal hernia at our Institution. The prosthesis was placed on the floor of the inguinal canal, as described in the original technique, and later covered by the fibrocremasteric sheath.

Introduction: Although the intervention of knee arthroplasty became routine, there is no standard reference on the densitometric characteristics of the patella before and after surgery. Scope of this work is the evaluation of patellar bone density before and after unilateral knee arthroplasty.

Patients And Methods: BMD was assessed by DEXA examination in 146 individuals, who have been divided into three distinct groups.

Pancreas divisum is a genetic defect associated with recurrent acute pancreatitis due to insufficient drainage of the accessory pancreatic duct. Seven young patients diagnosed with pancreatic divisum and thickening of the gallbladder bile as shown on magnetic resonance cholangio-pancreatography without pancreatic ductal changes underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. During the mean follow-up of 32 months no episode of pancreatitis was reported.

This case report is about a 70-years-old female patient, suffering from discal hernia, with compression of the iliac vein, that led to the formation of deep vein thrombosis of the lower limbs. The angio-CT scan revealed the starting point of the L4- L5 compression where a voluminous discal hernia caused deep vein thrombosis, with the involvement the femoro-popliteal venous axis. Blood samples and PET-CT scans excluded other possible etiologic factors.

The improvement of the socio-economic conditions and the progress of medicine have extended the life span of the world's population and as a result, the number of patients with malignant neoplasms has increased. Gastric cancer is the third most common cancer (after lung and prostate) and the second leading cause of death caused by cancer (after lung bronchogenic cell carcinoma) in males; while it's the fifth cancer by frequency and the fourth cause of cancer death in females. It presents a peculiar geographical distribution with a lower incidence in Western Europe and North America, and higher incidence in the Far East, South America and Eastern Europe.

Aim of this work was to investigate a possible correlation between the frequency of JCV-specific T-cells and PML occurrence in HIV-infected subjects and in liver transplant recipients. A significant decrease of JCV-specific T-cells was observed in HIV-PML subjects, highlighting a close relation between JCV-specific T-cell immune impairment and PML occurrence in HIV-subjects. Interestingly, liver-transplant recipients (LTR) showed a low frequency of JCV-specific T-cells, similar to HIV-PML subjects.

Objective: Cervical radiation for head and neck cancer has been associated with an increased incidence of carotid arterial stenosis. Modern radiation therapy delivers higher doses with increasing long-term survival. In our study 50 patients with head and neck malignancies treated with radiotherapy are analized with colour Doppler ultrasonographic scanning of the carotid arteries.

Article Synopsis
  • Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is a rare cancer that typically occurs more often in individuals with Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), but five cases have been documented in patients without NF1 arising from the parapharyngeal space (PPS).
  • Imaging techniques, specifically CT scans and MRIs, were utilized in a reported case of MPNST in the PPS of a patient who lacked any family history or symptoms of NF1.
  • The imaging results were analyzed and correlated with the histopathological diagnosis to inform proper treatment planning.

Introduction: The IGF system has recently been shown to play an important role in the regulation of breast tumor cell proliferation. However, also breast density is currently considered as the strongest breast cancer risk factor. It is not yet clear whether these factors are interrelated and if and how they are influenced by menopausal status.
