It is assumed that in candidates for TNF-alpha inhibitor (TNFi) treatment, tuberculin skin test (TST) may be unreliable, since BCG vaccination causes false positive and drugs cause false negative results, favoring the use of Quantiferon or T-spot assays. However, these tests may not be readily available in all parts of the world. We aimed to determine the reliability of TST with respect to BCG vaccination and drugs in candidates for TNFi treatment, and how isoniazid is tolerated, assuming that the use of TST would result in increased isoniazid use.

Antibacterial effects of saliva substitutes containing lysozyme or lactoferrin against Streptococcus mutans.

Objective: To determine the antibacterial effects of different saliva-substitutes-containing-lysozyme(LYZ) or-lactoferrin(LF) on Streptococcus mutans(S. mutans) in comparison with human saliva.

Design: In vitro wound-healing assay was performed with L929 mouse fibroblast cell line by using various concentrations of LYZ and LF to determine optimum concentrations and to confirm do not show any cytotoxicity of proteins according to cell culture studies.

Evaluation of the Neuroprotective Effect of Pycnogenol in a Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury Model in Newborn Rats.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Pycnogenol (PYC) and its antioxidant and antiapoptotic effect in an experimental hypoxic-ischemic (HI) rat model.

Study Design: A total of 24 Wistar albino rats who were on the seventh postnatal day were divided into three groups with developed HI brain injury model under the sevoflurane anesthesia: 40 mg/kg PYC was given to Group A, saline was given to Group B, and the sham group was Group C. Neuronal apoptosis was investigated by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling and immunohistochemically stained manually with primer antibodies of tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β.

Thoracic air leak syndromes (TALS) are very rare among the noninfectious pulmonary complications (PCs). They can either be idiopathic or have several risk factors such as allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT), graft versus host disease and rarely pulmonary aspergillosis. We present a 14-year-old girl with hypoplastic myelodysplastic syndrome who developed graft versus host disease on day 60, TALS on day 150, bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome on day 300, pulmonary aspergillosis on day 400 and COVID-19 pneumonia on day 575 after allo-HSCT.

The analysis of pleural complications of COVID-19 pneumonia.

Background/aim: As the number of case reports related to the new type of coronavirus (COVID-19) increases, knowledge of and experience with the virus and its complications also increase. Pleural complications are one relevant issue. We aimed in this study to analyze pleural complications, such as pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, and empyema, in patients hospitalized with the diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia.

Videothoracoscopic Bronchial Sleeve Resection for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

Nowadays, videothoracoscopic lobectomy is accepted as the standard treatment method in early-stage lung cancer. Sleeve lobectomy, which is an alternative to pneumonectomy in centrally located tumors or peribronchial tumor infiltration, was previously performed via thoracotomy, but it can be performed by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) in recent years. In this method, without compromising oncological principles, a more comfortable and less morbid postoperative process can be provided to the patient compared to thoracotomy.

Design and Construction of a PET-Compatible Double-Tuned H/P MR Head Coil.

Simultaneous MR-PET is an increasingly popular multimodal imaging technique that is able to combine metabolic information obtained from PET with anatomical/functional information from MRI. One of the key technological challenges of the technique is the integration of a PET-transparent MR coil system, a solution to which is demonstrated here for a double-tuned H/P head coil at 3 T. Two single-resonant birdcage coils tuned to the H and P resonances were arranged in an interleaved fashion and electrically decoupled with the use of trap circuits.

Background:  The use of laryngeal mask airway (LMA) ventilation in surgeries to be performed in upper tracheal stenosis has been reported in the case series.
