An overview of the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mariculture industry of the republic of Croatia is provided. An initial online survey was circulated early after the onset of the pandemic and a follow-up field survey was performed a year into the pandemic. The surveyed companies varied in size (micro to medium enterprises), location (north, central and southern coast) and cultured organism (European flat oyster, Mediterranean mussel, European sea bass, Gilthead sea bream and/or Bluefin tuna) and were asked questions on the subject of economic and job losses, aquaculture supply chain processes and implemented or proposed measures for mitigation of negative effects.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFAim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the moderating effect of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ) gene variants on the association of serum C-reactive protein level (CRP) and ischemic stroke (IS).
Material And Methods: A total of 114 patients with IS and 135 healthy controls were included.
Results: After adjustment for age, sex, total cholesterol, LDL and HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, hypertension, smoking, body mass index and previous therapy with antihypertensive and/or statins, PPAR-γ had statistically significant moderating effect on association of serum CRP level and IS in patients younger than 60.

European lobster is an intensively fished crustacean species in the Adriatic Sea which reaches high market value. Since knowledge of population structure and dynamics is important for effective fisheries management, in this study, we used 14 neutral microsatellites loci and partial mitochondrial COI region sequencing to explore population connectivity and genetic structure by comparing samples from the Adriatic Sea and the adjacent basins of the Mediterranean Sea.

Subjects And Methods: During one year period, OLAI was applied to 30 patients with schizophrenia (18 men, 12 women) who were non-adherent to previous treatment with oral olanzapine. Patients were 20-58 years of age (39 years old on average), diagnosed with SCID based on DSM-IV-TR criteria.
Long interspersed nuclear element-1s (LINE-1s, or L1s) are an active family of retrotransposable elements that continue to mutate mammalian genomes. Despite the large contribution of L1 to mammalian genome evolution, we do not know where active L1 particles (particles in the process of retrotransposition) are located in the cell, or how they move towards the nucleus, the site of L1 reverse transcription. Using a yeast model of LINE retrotransposition, we identified ESCRT (endosomal sorting complex required for transport) as a critical complex for LINE retrotransposition, and verified that this interaction is conserved for human L1.

The sirtuins Hst3 and Hst4 deacetylate H3K56 after S phase, and virtually all histone H3 molecules are K56 acetylated throughout the cell cycle in hst3∆ hst4∆ mutants. Failure to deacetylate H3K56 causes thermosensitivity, spontaneous DNA damage, and sensitivity to replicative stress via molecular mechanisms that remain unclear.

Method: A naturalistic cohort of patients diagnosed with DSM-IV bipolar disorder (N = 112), schizophrenia (N = 503), and schizoaffective disorder (N = 92) were assessed for metabolic disturbances. The prospective inclusions started in November 2003 and were concluded in July 2007.
Deacetylation of histone H3 K56, regulated by the sirtuins Hst3p and Hst4p, is critical for maintenance of genomic stability. However, the physiological consequences of a lack of H3 K56 deacetylation are poorly understood. Here we show that cells lacking Hst3p and Hst4p, in which H3 K56 is constitutively hyperacetylated, exhibit hallmarks of spontaneous DNA damage, such as activation of the checkpoint kinase Rad53p and upregulation of DNA-damage inducible genes.

Methods: From January 1, 2003, to December 31, 2004, we retrospectively compared two-year rehospitalization rates of 135 patients with newly diagnosed schizophrenia and 398 patients with chronic schizophrenia (62% and 65% men, respectively), who were initially discharged from Vrapce Psychiatric Hospital, Zagreb, with the prescription of atypical (olanzapine, risperidone or clozapine) or typical (haloperidol or fluphenazine) antipsychotic treatment between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2002. Time-to-readmission was determined with Kaplan-Meier formula for survival analysis.
Background: Acetylation of histone H3 lysine 56 (K56Ac) occurs transiently in newly synthesized H3 during passage through S phase and is removed in G2. However, the physiologic roles and effectors of K56Ac turnover are unknown.
Results: The sirtuins Hst3p and, to a lesser extent, Hst4p maintain low levels of K56Ac outside of S phase.
In this article the authors present through theory and case reports on the phenomenon of glossolalia, the unusual vocal utterances that sound language-like. Sense, meaning and function of glossolalia are closely connected with social and cultural context, and therefore glossolalia is experienced as a normal and expected behavior in religious prayer groups, while in mental disorders it is considered a psychopathological symptom. Historic theological debates explain the pure spiritual etiology of glossolalia, while the current studies present the phenomenon of glossolalia as a result of learned behavior and training.
