Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a complex systemic autoimmune disorder characterized by a hypercoagulable state, leading to severe vascular thrombosis and obstetric complications. The 2023 ACR/EULAR guidelines have revolutionized the classification and understanding of APS, introducing broader diagnostic criteria that encompass previously overlooked cardiac, renal, and hematologic manifestations. Despite these advancements, diagnosing APS remains particularly challenging in seronegative patients, where traditional tests fail, yet clinical symptoms persist.

  • A study compared the outcomes of open radical cystectomy (ORC) and robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) in patients with pT4a muscle-invasive bladder cancer, involving 212 patients.
  • Results showed that RARC had a significantly shorter operative time, less estimated blood loss, and lower rates of both intraoperative and postoperative transfusions compared to ORC.
  • RARC also led to a shorter hospital stay and a lower positive surgical margin rate, while both surgical methods had similar oncological outcomes.

Lupus nephritis (LN) is a pathologically heterogenous autoimmune disease linked to end-stage kidney disease and mortality. Better therapeutic strategies are needed as only 30%-40% of patients completely respond to treatment. Noninvasive biomarkers of intrarenal inflammation may guide more precise approaches.

The renal kallikrein-kinin system (RKKS) has been related to blood pressure control and sodium and water balance. We have previously shown that female spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) have high urinary kallikrein activity (UKa) and lower blood pressure (BP) than males whereas ovariectomy stimulates UKa and diminishes BP. We also showed that high K intake and prepuberal gonadectomy (Gx) diminish BP with a concomitant increase in UKa and plasma aldosterone levels.
