Clinical outcomes of catheter ablation remain suboptimal in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), particularly in those with persistent AF, despite decades of research, clinical trials, and technological advancements. Recently, pulsed-field ablation (PFA), a promising non-thermal technology, has been introduced to improve procedural outcomes. Its unique feature of myocardial selectivity offers safety advantages by avoiding potential harm to vulnerable adjacent structures during AF ablation.

The historical restriction of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) has been lifted by certified MRI-conditional systems in recent years. Mixed-brand CIED systems consisting of a generator from one manufacturer and at least one lead from another manufacturer are not certified for MRI. We evaluated the temporal trend in the prevalence of mixed-brand systems in the era of MRI-conditional systems.

Article Synopsis
  • Inappropriate therapies (ITs) in patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are often triggered by supraventricular tachyarrhythmias (SVTs).
  • The THINGS study analyzed 526 patients with single-lead ICDs to estimate the IT incidence and identified factors like younger age and history of atrial fibrillation as significant risk contributors.
  • Results showed a low IT rate of 4.2% at one year and 7.1% at two years, with dual-chamber (DC) discrimination showing a trend towards fewer ITs compared to single-chamber (SC) discrimination in the VT zone.

Background: Lung cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer in the world. Up to 84% of diagnosed patients have malnutrition, which can negatively affect quality of life and survival and may worsen with neoadjuvant treatment. Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis-Derived Phase Angle (PhA) in these patients could be a valid tool to assess the nutritional status in order to improve their condition.

Objective: To report cross-sectionally serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] in women living in Italy within 12 months from breast cancer (BC) diagnosis.

Methods: Baseline data were obtained from 394 women diagnosed with primary BC, enrolled from 2016 to 2019 in a lifestyle trial conducted in Italy. Subjects' characteristics were compared between two 25(OH)D concentrations (hypovitaminosis D<20 and ≥20 ng/mL) with the Chi-squared test or Fisher's exact test for small-expected counts.

Background: A cholesterol-lowering diet score was previously developed for epidemiological studies; its association with serum lipid profile was not confirmed yet.

Methods: The score was developed as an adaptation of the dietary portfolio for cholesterol reduction, assigning one point for adherence to seven dietary indicators and ranging from 0 (null adherence) to 7 (highest adherence). The score was calculated for breast cancer patients enrolled in the DEDiCa study using a 7-day food record; serum lipid profile, including total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), was evaluated in serum at baseline.

The very high-power short-duration (vHP-SD) ablation strategy is an alternative for pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). However, the acute procedural biophysical behavior of successful lesion creation by means of this technique is still unexplored. We performed a retrospective case-control study aimed at evaluating the behavior of vHP-SD ablation parameters with the QDOT MICRO™ ablation catheter (Biosense Webster) compared with standard radiofrequency (RF) ablation with the THERMOCOOL SMARTTOUCH ablation catheter.

Background: Metastatic disease in tumors originating from the gastrointestinal tract can exhibit varying degrees of tumor burden at presentation. Some patients follow a less aggressive disease course, characterized by a limited number of metastatic sites, referred to as "oligo-metastatic disease" (OMD). The precise biological characteristics that define the oligometastatic behavior remain uncertain.

Unlabelled: The role of internal dosimetry is usually proposed for investigational purposes in patients treated by RLT, even if its application is not yet the standard method in clinical practice. This limited use is partially justified by several concomitant factors that make calculations a complex process. Therefore, simplified dosimetry protocols are required.
