Background And Purpose:

Syringomyelia is a neurological condition in which a longitudinal fluid-filled cavity is formed within the spinal cord. It usually occurs in the cervical region and is associated with Chiari malformation, infections, trauma, and tumors of the spinal cord. However, syringomyelia associated with cervical disc disease (SCD) is very rare and only a few cases have been reported so far.

Concomitant pituitary adenomas and Rathke's cleft cysts (RCCs) are rare. These coexisting lesions are difficult to diagnose preoperatively due to their variable signal intensity on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and position of the RCC. We describe three cases of coexisting pituitary adenoma and RCC, and review the relevant literature.

Vasospasm is the main causes of mortality and morbidity in patiens with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The arterial narrowing mechanism that develops after SAH is not yet fully understood but many studies showed that hypotension, neurogenic reflexes, clots in the subarachnoidal space, spasmogenic agents, humoral and celluler immunity play a role in the etiology. In this study we investigate the effects of Bromocriptine and Cyclosporine A in vasospasm secondary to SAH on rat femoral artery from ultrastructural and morphometric perspectives.

Background: Chronic intradiploic hematoma was first described by Chorbski and Davis in 1934. To date, only twelve cases have been reported in the literature. Chronic intradiploic hematomas have also been described as non-neoplastic cysts of the diploe, traumatic cysts, and giant cell repetitive granulomas.

Objective: Presence of steroid hormone receptors in meningiomas is well-known, but their correlation with tumour behaviour is unclear. The purpose of this study was to assess the relation between steroid hormone receptor expression and tumour behaviour.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 48 patients undergoing surgery for intracranial meningioma between January 2002 and December 2004.

We present a patient with an intracerebral haematoma occurring at a remote site following evacuation of a chronic subdural haematoma. Recurrence of the haematoma, infection, seizure, cerebral edema, tension pneumocephalus and failure of the brain to expand due to cerebro-cranial disproportion are the major complications following operations for chronic subdural haematoma. An intracerebral haematoma following such evacuation is rare.

Background: A different transodontoid screw fixation technique was studied in delayed type II odontoid fractures. This study presents observations on a different transodontoid fixation technique to remove and decrease the amount of sclerotic layers to accelerate the fusion process after the operation.

Methods: Ten cases of chronic type II odontoid fractures were operated on via transodontoid screw fixation between 2000 and 2007 which were admitted 6 weeks or later after the trauma.

In childhood and adolescence, pituitary adenomas are rare and half are prolactinomas. However, cystic giant prolactinoma in prepuberty is extremely rare. In this report, we present a 10-year-old boy with a cystic giant prolactinoma who was treated with two-stage surgery as the tumor was dumbbell shaped.

Aneurysms of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) are rare, and may arise in unusual locations due to the complex and variable anatomy of this artery. The PICA does not usually originate from the extracranial vertebral artery. Of the few reported extracranial PICA aneurysms, all affected the distal segment.

Background: An association between meningioma, breast cancer, and increased growth of meningiomas during pregnancy, and the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle have been shown in previous reports, but the mechanisms still remain unclear. These data suggest that sex steroids and growth factors may have a role in the growth of meningiomas. This is an important factor to consider during the development of more effective nonsurgical treatment options.

Object: Chronic subdural hematomas (SDHs) are a local inflammatory process that causes the formation of a granulation tissue often referred to as the external or outer membrane. This membrane has abnormally permeable macrocapillaries. Therefore, exudation from the macrocapillaries in the outer membrane of chronic SDH may play an important role in the enlargement of chronic SDH.

Intracranial mucocele is rare. They are slow-growing lesions and usually form as a result of an obstruction of the paranasal sinuses, particularly by osteoma, fibrosis, trauma, previous surgery or inflammation. The effect of pregnancy in the development of intracranial mucocele is unclear.

Background: Anterior cervical microdiscectomy (ACD) is commonly applied in the surgical treatment of cervical disc herniation. However, following discectomy procedure to perform a fusion process is still controversial. Therefore, a controlled, multicentric, prospective, randomized study was designed.

Study Design: A case report and literature review are presented.

Objective: To describe and review the clinical presentations, characteristic findings from imaging studies, types, differential diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of amyloidoma arising within the vertebrae.

Summary Of Background Data: Amyloidoma can occur in the bone, skin, larynx, lymph nodes, urinary bladder, eye, tongue, and gastrointestinal system.

Lipomas of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) are rare. A recent literature review identified only 98 reported cases of CPA lipoma. We present here a case of CPA lipoma in a 28-year-old woman who was admitted to our hospital with hearing loss in her left ear.

A 28-year-old woman presented with a rare primary epidural hemangioma without adjacent vertebral involvement manifesting as progressive paraparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging of the thoracic spine showed an epidural lesion at T4-5 space appearing as isointense on T1-weighted images with enhancement by contrast medium and hyperintense on T2-weighted images. The lesion was totally removed microsurgically.

Purpose: To prospectively define proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) findings of meningiomas, and describe the ability or inability of short- and long-echo MRS to differentiate typical and atypical meningiomas in vivo.

Material And Methods: Seventeen patients with pathologically confirmed typical meningiomas and six with atypical meningiomas were evaluated with conventional MR imaging and MRS before resection. MRS studies using point-resolved spectroscopy (PRESS) localisation, at short- and long-echo time (TR 2000 ms, TE: 30 and 144 ms, 64-96 acquisition) were acquired on a 1.

A 50-year-old male patient presented with a rare dural supratentorial hemangioblastoma manifesting as severe headache persisting for 2 months. Neuroimaging revealed a tumoral mass localized in the right parietal lobe near the sagittal sinus. The tumor was totally excised successfully.

Although malignant lymphoma of the central nervous system (CNS) is rarely seen, its frequency is increasing as a result of more common observation of immunocompromised patients. Primary CNS lymphoma arise usually in the white matter of brain and account for only 0.5-1.

Intracranial chondromas are uncommon intracranial tumours that most frequently arise from the skull base. They can, however, arise from the calvarium or the meninges. In these cases their neuroradiological features may mimic other intracranial tumours.

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFT) of the central nervous system are rare. They resemble meningioma in clinical presentation, imaging features and appearance at surgery. Schwannoma, hemangiopericytoma and other spindle cell mesenchymal neoplasms should also be considered in the differential diagnosis.
