The spectral shape, irradiance, direction, and diffuseness of daylight vary regularly throughout the day. The variations in illumination and their effect on the light reflected from objects may in turn provide visual information as to the time of day. We suggest that artists' color choices for paintings of outdoor scenes might convey this information and that therefore the time of day might be decoded from the colors of paintings.

Article Synopsis
  • We developed a technique to capture and analyze light in a 7-dimensional structure, focusing on how light affects perception.
  • Our method measures different light components, including diffuse and directed light, and tracks their changes over time, color, and direction.
  • We tested this approach in real-world conditions, observing how lighting varies in different environments, like sunny versus cloudy days, and highlighted its benefits for understanding complex lighting effects on scenes and objects.
