Purpose: Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-type endotoxins are naturally found in the gut microbiota and there is emerging evidence linking gut microbiota and neuroinflammation leading to retinal neurodegeneration. Thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) is a biomarker of retinal neurodegeneration, and a hallmark of glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Introduction: Even though the local tolerance of prostaglandin (PG) analogues has improved drastically since the introduction of preservative-free (PF) eye drops, prescription patterns still vary widely among practitioners and between countries and could have an impact on the ocular surface of treated patients and, in consequence, their adherence.
