Article Synopsis
  • In September 2023, France launched a national immunization campaign using nirsevimab, a monoclonal antibody targeting respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
  • A case-control study was conducted with 288 infants from 20 pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) to assess the effectiveness of nirsevimab against severe RSV bronchiolitis.
  • The study found nirsevimab to have an effectiveness of 75.9% in the main analysis, with higher estimates of 80.6% and 80.4% in sensitivity analyses, confirming its efficacy observed in previous clinical trials.

Objectives: Sun-seeking vacationers are particularly vulnerable to melanoma. Appearance-based interventions (ABi) showing skin damage of ultraviolet exposure may be a promising prevention tool to improve skin protection. This study aimed to measure and compare the efficacy of an ABi and a health-based intervention (HBi) on French summer vacationers' behaviours and to identify differences between subpopulations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how educational level influences sun protection behaviors among French vacationers on the Mediterranean coast, focusing on the role of cognitive and psychosocial factors.* -
  • Findings indicate that higher educational attainment correlates with increased sun protection, with theoretical knowledge acting as a key mediator, especially for those with intermediate education.* -
  • The research emphasizes the need for targeted sun safety interventions, particularly for individuals in lower socioeconomic positions, to enhance their understanding and practice of sun protection.*

Objectives: We aimed to assess the level of prior SARS-CoV-2 infection in socially deprived neighbourhoods after the first wave of the pandemic, and to identify factors associated with seropositivity.

Design: A cross-sectional study.

Setting: Three socially deprived neighbourhoods of the city of Perpignan, in the south of France, where large settled Roma communities live.

Background: In France, the lifting of the lockdown implemented to control the COVID-19 first wave in 2020 was followed by a reinforced contact-tracing (CT) strategy for the early detection of cases and transmission chains. We developed a reporting system of clusters defined as at least three COVID-19 cases, within seven days and belonging to the same community or having participated in the same gathering, whether they know each other or not. The aim of this study was to describe the typology and criticality of clusters reported between the two lockdowns in France to guide future action prioritisation.

Objectives: The Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused a considerable mortality in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), including residential care setting and nursing homes. This study aimed to estimate COVID-19 incidence and mortality in residential care facilities and to compare them with those recorded in nursing homes.

Design: Nationwide observational study conducted by French health authorities.

Sun exposure has short- and long-term adverse effects on eyes, skin, and the immune system. The most serious effect, melanoma, is largely attributable to natural ultraviolet radiation. Its prevalence is steadily increasing in fair-skinned populations in most European countries.

Introduction: Treating venous leg ulcers involves replacing dressings and applying compression bandages (CB). The technique for applying these bandages set out in the best practice guidelines shows nurses how to achieve the required level of pressure. Considerable differences have been observed between these guidelines and the actual application of CB.

After 150 years of industrial activity, significant pollution of surface soils in private gardens and locally produced vegetables with lead, cadmium, and arsenic has recently been observed in Viviez (Southern France). A public health intervention was conducted in 2008 to identify individual health risks of Viviez inhabitants and to analyze their environmental exposure to these pollutants. Children and pregnant women in Viviez were screened for lead poisoning.

Yeast lees influence the organoleptic properties of wines by increasing their sweet taste. This effect is in part due to the protein Hsp12p, which is regulated by different stress response pathways in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This work investigated the genetics and environmental factors influencing the expression level of the HSP12 gene in an enological context.

Quantitative genetics and QTL mapping are efficient strategies for deciphering the genetic polymorphisms that explain the phenotypic differences of individuals within the same species. Since a decade, this approach has been applied to eukaryotic microbes such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae in order to find natural genetic variations conferring adaptation of individuals to their environment. In this work, a QTL responsible for lag phase duration in the alcoholic fermentation of grape juice was dissected by reciprocal hemizygosity analysis.
