Suspected adverse reactions (SARs) reported for Cartrophen Vet (100 mg sodium pentosan polysulphate/ml) to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate in the UK for the period January 1991 to October 1999 were reviewed. Of the 161 reports, 28 were probably product related, 54 were possibly product related, 71 were unlikely to be related and eight were unclassified. The experiments of Hale and Smith (1945) which purported to show that coagulase production protected staphylococci from phagocytosis by polymorphs have been repeated, making allowance for the effect of variation in the number of leucocytes and staphylococci in the experimental system on the number of organisms phagocytosed. It is concluded that their findings were dependent upon these factors and cannot be taken as evidence that coagulase production protects staphylococci against phagocytosis.
