To investigate an association between KI and WU polyomavirus (KIPyV and WUPyV) infections and CD4+ cell counts, we tested HIV-1-positive patients and blood donors. No association was found between cell counts and virus infections in HIV-1-positive patients. Frequency of KIPyV infection was similar for both groups.

Background: Recently, three new polyomaviruses-KI, WU and Merkel cell (MCV)-have been discovered and their detection has been reported in different types of specimens, including respiratory samples, suggesting their shedding in the airways. In lung graft recipients, viral agents are associated with events that may limit the success of transplantation, including organ infection/disease and allograft rejection.

Aims: To evaluate the prevalence of KI, WU and MCV in transbronchial biopsies from lung transplant recipients and investigate the association with clinical and histopathological features.

The newly discovered polyomaviruses KI and WU (KIV and WUV) were isolated from secretions of patients with respiratory symptoms as well as in blood, spleen, lymphoid tissues, and stools, especially in immunocompromised conditions. The monitoring of herpesvirus infection plays a central role in lung transplantation (LT). Herein we evaluated the prevalence of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6), human herpesvirus-7 (HHV-7), and Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) DNA in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and transbronchial biopsy (TBB) specimens from LT patients. Experimental results showing significant reductions from classical in the Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth rate due to high pressure effective lattice viscosity are presented. Using a laser created ramped drive, vanadium samples are compressed and accelerated quasi-isentropically at approximately 1 Mbar peak pressures, while maintaining the sample in the solid state. Comparisons with simulations and theory indicate that the high pressure, high strain rate conditions trigger a phonon drag mechanism, resulting in the observed high effective lattice viscosity and strong stabilization of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability.

Background: Concomitant chemoradiotherapy (CT/RT) is the standard treatment of locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN). We evaluated the efficacy of induction docetaxel (Taxotere), cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil (TPF) before CT/RT versus CT/RT alone.

Patients And Methods: Patients with stage III-IVM0 SCCHN, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of zero to one, were randomly assigned to receive CT/RT alone (arm A: two cycles of cisplatin 20 mg/m(2), days1-4, plus 5-fluorouracil 800 mg/m(2)/day 96 h continuous infusion, during weeks 1 and 6 of radiotherapy) or three cycles of TPF (arm B: docetaxel 75 mg/m(2) and cisplatin 80 mg/m(2), day 1, and 5-fluorouracil 800 mg/m(2)/day 96 h continuous infusion, every 3 weeks) followed by the same CT/RT.

The association of human herpesvirus-7 with lung diseases is poorly known, although it has been suggested a role in causing interstitial pneumonia in non-transplant patients and bronchiolitis-obliterans-organizing-pneumonia in lung transplant. No case of acute respiratory distress syndrome associated to human herpesvirus-7 has been reported, while only one case associated with human herpesvirus-6 has been described in an immunocompetent patient. This report describes the identification of human herpesvirus-7 reactivation in an immunocompetent patient with acute respiratory distress syndrome, as evidenced by the increasing viral load in bronchoalveolar lavage, polyneuropathy, histopathological findings, and tissue positivity.

Recently, polyomaviruses KI and WU were identified in the airways of patients with acute respiratory symptoms. The epidemiology and pathogenesis of these two viruses are not fully understood, and the development of molecular assays, such as Real Time PCR, was useful for examining their biology and role in different clinical syndromes. The molecular epidemiology and tissue distribution of Human Parvovirus 4 (PARV4) and its variant PARV5 (Parvoviridae family) are poorly known. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiological role and prevalence of PARV4/5 by a nested-PCR on different clinical specimens, including blood samples from healthy donors, healthy and pathological skin samples, and bronchoalveolar lavages (BAL). Among blood specimens, 2/53 were positive; 3/37 and 23/105 of healthy and pathological skin specimens resulted positive, respectively, whereas no BAL was positive.

Human herpesvirus 7 is a highly seroprevalent beta-herpesvirus that, following primary infection, remains latent in CD4+ T cells and determines a persistent rather than a latent infection in various tissues and organs, including the lung and skin. This paper describes the development of an in-house light upon extension real-time PCR assay for quantification of human herpesvirus 7 DNA in clinical samples. The efficiency, sensitivity, specificity, inter- and intra-assay variability, and dynamic range have been determined.

Human Rhinoviruses (HRV) are the most common viral agents, being responsible for upper as well as lower respiratory tract infections. Evidence demonstrating that HRV disease is not exclusively limited to the upper airways and may cause lower respiratory complications, together with the frequency of HRV infections and the increasing number of immunocompromised patients underline the need for including HRV in virological diagnostics of acute lower respiratory tract illness. Type II mixed cryoglobulinemia is sustained by an oligoclonal production of IgM sharing rheumatoid activity and can be associated with renal, cutaneous, rheumatologic or neurological manifestations. Peripheral neuropathy is a major cause of morbidity in hepatitis C virus-associated mixed cryoglobulinemia and is often refractory to any treatment. Rituximab induces a selective depletion of IgM-producing B cells, and both case reports on monoclonal IgM-related polyneuropathy as well as studies on small series of patients with interferon alpha-resistant mixed cryoglobulinemia have suggested that it may be beneficial.

The importance of viral agents in the development of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL) is still debated. For this purpose, we retrospectively evaluated the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) presence in Sézary syndrome (SS), mycosis fungoides (MF), inflammatory dermatoses (ID), and healthy donors (HD) using different approaches: EBV-DNA was quantified in skin biopsies and peripheral blood using real-time PCR, EBV-encoded small RNA (EBER) transcripts were detected by in situ hybridization (ISH), and latent membrane protein1-2 antigens were detected by immunohistochemistry. Skin biopsies were EBV-DNA-positive in 8/30 (27%) SS, 7/71 (10%) MF, and 2/18 (11%) ID patients and in none of the 25 normal skin samples.
