Severe hyponatremia due to hypopituitarism with adrenal insufficiency: a case report.

Objective: Adrenal insufficiency due to hypopituitarism can lead to severe hyponatremia with potentially fatal consequences. Prompt diagnosis and adequate hormonal replacement therapy are essential to block an otherwise unfavorable course and to re-establish a healthy life. Unfortunately, this condition is often misdiagnosed.

Large periampullary villous tumor of the duodenum.

A 67-year-old woman, who had symptoms of epigastric pain and abdominal distension, was found, on endoscopy, to have a large sessile villous adenoma of the periampullary duodenum. Despite the lack of evidence of malignancy, a pancreaticoduodenectomy procedure was performed, mainly because of the tumor size and site, involving the ampulla of Vater. The presence of the carcinoma was diagnosed only in the resected specimen by definitive histology.

Field effect transistors with organic semiconductor layers assembled from aqueous colloidal nanocomposites.

We demonstrate field effect transistors based on organic semiconductor molecules dispersed in a self-organized polystyrene (PS) latex bead matrix. An aqueous colloidal composite made of PS and tetrahexylsexithiophene (H4T6) is deposited with a micropipet into the channel of a bottom-contact field effect transistor. The beads self-organize into a network whose characteristic distances are governed by their packing.

Autologous fibroblasts to treat deep and complicated leg ulcers in diabetic patients.

Large complicated leg ulcers, not responsive to standard therapy, after surgical debridement and under parenteral specific antibiosis, must be occlusively covered to improve wound healing. In 10 diabetic patients with deep (Wagner degree 3), large, and Staphylococcus aureus (n=7) or Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n=5)-infected leg (n=1), or foot (n=9) ulcers, we have applied, as a coverage, meshes of in vitro expanded autologous fibroblasts. Complete ulcer healing was observed in seven patients after 8, 12, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 weeks from the first graft application (Figures 2 and 3).

Self-organization of nano-lines and dots triggered by a local mechanical stimulus.

When a local mechanical perturbation is applied to the surface of a thin film of a mechanically interlocked molecule (a rotaxane), the molecules self-organize into periodic arrays of discrete dots or lines. The dimensionality of the nanostructures depends on whether the mechanical stimulus acts along a 1D line or over a 2D area. The size (50-500 nm) and periodicity (100-600 nm) of the patterns are controlled solely by the film thickness.

A new class of chiral oligothiophenes is described. Mono-, bi-, ter-, and quarterthiophenes have been linked to enantiopure trans-1,2-cyclohexanediamine (DACH) via diamino or diimino moieties. The stereochemistry of DACH, the type of linker, and oligothiophene size determine the conformational flexibility of these molecules and consequently their molecular and supramolecular helicity in solution and in the solid state.

Ordered patterning of nanometric rings of single molecule magnets on polymers by lithographic control of demixing.

We report a new patterning process which takes place as a result of demixing of a binary polymer/solute mixture. An efficient, sustainable approach for ordering nanosized rings of so-called single molecule magnets (SMMs) is thus provided. It exploits the self-organization process in which SMM patterned film evolves to a spatially correlated pattern of nanosized rings.

Omeprazole and misoprostol for preventing gastric mucosa effects caused by indomethacin and celecoxib in rats.

Objective: While many studies have examined the relation between antihypertensive treatment and ventricular hypertrophy, relatively few data are available regarding changes in arterial structure due to blood pressure reduction. Therefore, we compared normotensive to untreated hypertensive subjects to uncontrolled (treated with elevated blood pressure values) or controlled (treated with normal blood pressure values) hypertensive older subjects.

The self-organization of rotaxane thin films into spatially correlated nanostructures is shown to occur upon a thermal stimulus. The mechanism of formation of nanostructures and their organization has been investigated using atomic force microscopy, bright field transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and molecular mechanics simulations. The evolution of the nanostructures follows a complex pathway, where a rotaxane thin film first dewets from the substrate to form nanosized droplets.

Charge transport properties in organic semiconductors depend strongly on molecular order. Here we demonstrate field-effect transistors where drain current flows through a precisely defined array of nanostripes made of crystalline and highly ordered molecules. The molecular stripes are fabricated across the channel of the transistor by a stamp-assisted deposition of the molecular semiconductors from a solution.

The concept of ecological niche, considered by the food dimension point of view, was used to characterize a small farmers community from the south of Minas Gerais State (Brazil). Ten small farmer families and 76 different meals eaten by them were evaluated in this study, during three different periods: September 1995 (end of the dry season), December 1995 (rainy season) and April 1996 (end of the rainy season). The analysed community appeared to depend markedly on certain food items showing little seasonal variation in their diet and appeared also to be self-sufficient in food supply, with satisfactory nutritional status.

Effects of mild hypothermia on blood coagulation in patients undergoing elective plastic surgery.

Background: The aim of this prospective, controlled study was to evaluate the effects on coagulation function of active patient warming during elective plastic surgery.

Methods: Seventy-six patients undergoing elective plastic surgery (additive and reductive mastoplasty, rhinoplasty, and liposuction) were either covered with standard sterile drapes (control group, n = 38) or actively warmed during surgery with countercurrent fluid warming and forced-air skin warming (treatment group, n = 38). Complete evaluation of the coagulation activity was performed 1 hour before general anesthesia was induced and then at the end of surgery.
