The salivary glands are structurally similar to the exocrine pancreas and may be involved in the course of diseases of autoimmune origin (sclerosing cholangitis, ulcerative rectocolitis, primary biliary cirrhosis). For a not-yet-quantified proportion of chronic pancreatitis (CP) cases, a possible autoimmune pathogenesis has been postulated. The aim of the study was to assess the frequency of salivary ductal system abnormalities in patients with CP.

The aim of the study was to compare the incidence of cancer, whether pancreatic or extrapancreatic, in our chronic pancreatitis cases with that in the population of our region.
Methods: We analyzed 715 cases of chronic pancreatitis with a median follow-up of 10 yr (7287 person-years); during this observation period they developed 61 neoplasms, 14 of which were pancreatic cancers.

Background: To value changes of endotracheal tube cuff pressure during anaesthesia with N2O, using standard tubes or Brandt-system tubes.
Methods: Endotracheal cuff pressure during anaesthesia in three groups of patients has been monitored: Group 1 (n. 41): endotracheal tube with low-pressure cuff using N2O/O2 (2:1 or 1:1); Group 2 (n.
Manometry is considered the gold standard for evaluating sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. It has recently been demonstrated that the ultrasound (US) secretin test proposed a few years ago as a noninvasive test for the study of sphincter of Oddi dysfunction yields a substantial percentage of pathological findings in patients with acute recurrent pancreatitis. The aim of this study was to compare the results of the US secretin test with sphincter of Oddi manometry findings in a consecutive series of patients with recurrent acute pancreatitis.

The aim of the present study was to validate their prognostic efficacy in combination.

Methods: At the end of operation a peridural catheter for continuative infusion was applied in the paravertebral socket by direct transfixion of chest wall. A local anaesthetic has been given (75 mg of bupivacaine 0.

In the light of recent studies into lattice corneal dystrophies, with particular reference to gelsolin immunoreactivity, the authors set out to determine the ultrastructural localization of gelsolin molecules in lattice corneal dystrophy type I. Immunoelectron microscopy with a monoclonal antibody against the COOH-terminal of the native gelsolin molecule (clone GS-2C4) was used to compare antigelsolin reactivity in normal and dystrophic corneas. A gelsolin-like protein was observed at the level of the rough endoplasmic reticulum in both epithelial and endothelial cells, together with mild positive staining in stromal keratocytes of normal corneas; increased keratocytic immunoreactivity with positive staining within and/or around corneal amyloid deposits was revealed in dystrophic corneas.

Background: We investigated the epidemiologic, clinical, and radiologic aspects of a mixed medicosurgical series of chronic pancreatitis patients observed at the University of Verona Centre for the Study of Pancreatic Diseases over the period 1971-1995.
Methods: Even though the pathogenesis of chronic pancreatitis has yet to be clarified and the classification is still debatable, the patients were subdivided in accordance with the Marseilles-Rome classification into those with alcoholic, obstructive, familial, and idiopathic forms of the disease. A total of 715 patients were analysed with a median follow-up period of 10 years (range, 1-25 years).

Lithostathine may play a physiological role in preventing the precipitation of excess calcium in the pancreatic juice. The hypothesis has been advanced that in chronic calcifying pancreatitis the abnormal biosynthesis of lithostathine might be the original defect to which genetic proneness to the disease may be ascribed. The aim of the present work was to study lithostathine messenger RNA expression in the pancreas of patients with different types of pancreatitis.

Dolichols are long hydrophobic molecules broadly distributed in all tissues and cellular membranes of eukariotic cells. Dolichol affects membrane structure and fluidity, membrane-associated protein activities, and membrane sensitivity to oxidative stress. Reports have shown that dolichols exhibit a remarkable (6- to 30-fold) age-related increase in the tissues of adult and mature rats and of old flies, mice, and humans.

Materials And Methods: Ten patients with cystic dystrophy of the duodenal wall and chronic pancreatitis underwent ultrasonography (US) (n = 10), computed tomography (CT) (n = 10), endoscopic US (n = 5), and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) (n = 9). Cystic dystrophy of the duodenal wall was classified as either cystic or solid.
The intravenous administration of octreotide stimulates sphincter of Oddi activity and impairs pancreatic flow into the duodenum. Postsecretin ultrasonography (US-S test) has revealed an increase in the caliber of the main pancreatic duct, which disappears in healthy persons approximately 10 minutes later as a result of the opening of the sphincter of Oddi and passage of stimulated fluids into the duodenum. We have assessed US-S test patterns after octreotide in healthy persons and in patients with recurrent acute pancreatitis.

The food intake of 40 male patients with chronic pancreatitis followed up at our center for > or = 10 y were compared with that of 75 healthy control subjects. Patients had significantly lower anthropometric values and serum triacylglycerol and cholesterol concentrations than control subjects (P < 0.001).

The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate duodenal ulcer risk factors such as alcohol intake, smoking, use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, age and sex in relation to HP colonization density.
Patients And Methods: 495 patients consecutively examined by diagnostic upper digestive endoscopy were assessed; none of them had had previous upper digestive endoscopy or peptic ulcer, recent anticulcer-antibiotic treatment, upper gastrointestinal surgery, or cancer.
Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction has been reported as a cause of acute idiopathic recurrent pancreatitis (IRP). Octreotide, a long-acting somatostatin analogue, is an antisecretory drug used in the treatment and prevention of acute pancreatitis. Its action on sphincter of Oddi motility is controversial and no data are available for IRP patients.

Methods: We conducted a multicenter, double-blind comparison of gabexate (1 g given by intravenous infusion starting 30 to 90 minutes before endoscopy and continuing for 12 hours afterward) with placebo (mannitol and sodium chloride, administered in the same fashion).

The aim of this study was to verify the presence and frequency of calcifications in patients with COP and compare them with those found in patients with chronic calcifying/calcific pancreatitis (CCP). We conducted a retrospective ERCP investigation in 115 patients with documented chronic pancreatitis.
