Much historic work has focused on establishing geographical and ecological rules that broadly explain patterns in size variation. We examined geographic variation in Spotted Hyena skull size using geometric morphometrics and spatial statistics. We quantified size variation and sexual size dimorphism of the skull, and evaluated the influence of temperature, precipitation, land cover type, and population density on skull size.

Association of the Infant Gut Microbiome with Temperament at Nine Months of Age: A Michigan Cohort Study.

Though studies in animals and humans link the gut microbiota to brain development and control of behavior, little research has examined this connection in healthy infants. This prospective study could determine associations between infant gut microbiota at 3 months, and infant temperament at 9 months, in a prospective pregnancy cohort (Michigan Archive for Research on Child Health; = 159). Microbiota profiling with 16S rRNA gene sequencing was conducted on fecal samples obtained at 3 months of age.

Orf Nodule with Erythema Multiforme during a Monkeypox Outbreak, France, 2022.

A 26-year-old patient in France who worked as a butcher sought care initially for erythema multiforme. Clinical examination revealed a nodule with a crusty center, which upon investigation appeared to be an orf nodule. Diagnosis was confirmed by PCR.

Pseudohyponatremia Secondary to Hypercholesterolemia in the Setting of Intrahepatic Cholestasis due to Metastatic Liver Disease: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Objective: We describe a rare case of pseudohyponatremia in the setting of hypercholesterolemia caused by cholestasis due to metastatic liver disease and provide a review of the published cases in the literature.

Case Report: We report a case of pseudohyponatremia in a 60-year-old man with rectal cancer with extensive metastasis to the liver. While assessing the patient for hyponatremia, extremely elevated serum cholesterol with normal serum osmolality was detected leading to the diagnosis of pseudohyponatremia.

Upper Limb Interactive Weightless Technology-Aided Intervention and Assessment Picks Out Motor Skills Improvement in Parkinson's Disease: A Pilot Study.

In Parkinson's disease, reaching movements are conditioned by motor planning and execution deficiency. Recently, rehabilitation, aided by high technological devices, was employed for Parkinson's disease. We aimed to (1) investigate the changes in the upper limb motor performances in a sample of a patient with Parkinson's disease after a weightless training, with a passive exoskeleton, in an augmented-feedback environment; (2) highlight differences by motor parameters (performance, speed, and movement accuracy) and by type of movement (simple or complex); and (3) evaluate movement improvements by UPDRS II-III.

Kinesio taping (KT), another recently-introduced rehabilitative tool, exerts an analgesic and biomechanical action on joints and muscles. ESWT and KT may have a synergic effect when used in combination, but the effectiveness of the association has not been established.

Migration of melamine into foods from melamine tableware has been object of recent Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) notifications. In this context, a rapid and sensitive desorption electrospray ionization-high resolution mass spectrometry (DESI-HRMS) method was developed and validated for the determination of melamine migration from plastic materials. The migration test was performed using acetic acid 3% (w/v) as food simulant.

The first crystal structure of a ternary redox protein complex was comprised of the enzyme methylamine dehydrogenase (MADH) and two electron transfer proteins, amicyanin and cytochrome c-551i from Paracoccus denitrificans [Chen et al. Mature beta-hexosaminidase A has been found associated to the external leaflet of plasma membrane of cultured fibroblasts. The plasma membrane association of beta-hexosaminidase A has been directly determined by cell surface biotinylation followed by affinity chromatography purification of the biotinylated proteins, and by immunocytochemistry. The immunological and biochemical characterization of biotinylated beta-hexosaminidase A revealed that the plasma membrane associated enzyme is fully processed, suggesting its lysosomal origin.

The production of active Arylsulfatase A is a key step in the development of enzyme replacement therapy for Metachromatic Leukodystrophy. To obtain large amounts of purified Arylsulfatase A for therapeutic use, we combined a retroviral expression system with a versatile and rapid purification protocol that can easily and reliably be adapted to high-throughput applications. The purification method consists of an initial ion-exchange DEAE-cellulose chromatography step followed by immuno-affinity purification using a polyclonal antibody against a 29-mer peptide of the Arylsulfatase A sequence.

It is believed that the lysosomal glycohydrolase beta-N-acetylhexosaminidase plays a part in several important processes of reproduction and it has been postulated that this enzyme is subject to hormonal regulation. During pregnancy, activity levels of the enzyme are strongly increased in both human and rat serum. However, little is known about the expression of this enzyme in the female reproductive apparatus and there is no evidence linking the production of hexosaminidase alpha- and beta-subunits to pregnancy.

Genetic alterations distinguish different types of ovarian tumors.

Seventy-four sporadic ovarian tumors were studied for loss of heterozygosity (LOH) and microsatellite instability (MI) with 20 polymorphic markers on chromosome 17 and at least I marker on every other chromosome. Additionally, activation of the K-ras oncogene was examined through mutation analysis of codon 12. A majority of the tumors analyzed were low grade and/or of the mucinous histologic type.

Clinical study on bronchodilation induced by a metered aerosol of fenoterol in combination with ipratropium bromide.

The response to an aerosol preparation containing 100 micrograms fenoterol and 40 micrograms ipratropium bromide per puff (Duovent) was compared with a placebo in 18 asthmatic patients in a double-blind cross-over fashion. We measured changes in lung function tests and pulse rate. Duovent induced a significant improvement in lung tests with statistical relevance for VEMS and Raw in comparison with placebo.
