Trace amounts of oxygen stimulate facultative anaerobic bacteria (FAB) within anaerobic bioreactors, which was shown to correlate with enhanced methane production from long-chain fatty acids. The relationship between FAB and fatty acid-degrading syntrophic communities under micro-aerobic conditions is still unclear. In this work, two syntrophic co-cultures, Syntrophomonas wolfei + Methanospirillum hungatei and Syntrophomonas zehnderi + Methanobacterium formicicum, were assembled and incubated with short, medium and long-chain fatty acids, with 0-10 % O, in the presence and absence of FAB, here represented by Pseudomonas spp.

Waste glycerol is produced in excess by several industries, such as during biodiesel production. In this work, the metabolic versatility of anaerobic sludge was explored towards waste glycerol valorization. By applying different environmental (methanogenic and sulfate-reducing) conditions, three distinct microbial cultures were obtained from the same inoculum (anaerobic granular sludge), with high microbial specialization, within three different phyla (Thermodesulfobacteriota, Euryarchaeota and Pseudomonadota).

Background: During pregnancy, the increase in maternal insulin resistance is compensated by hyperplasia and increased function of maternal pancreatic beta cells; the failure of this compensatory mechanism is associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Serotonin participates in beta cell adaptation, acting downstream of the prolactin pathway; the blocking of serotonin receptor B (HTR2B) signaling in pregnant mice impaired beta cell expansion and caused glucose intolerance. Thus, given the importance of the serotoninergic system for the adaptation of beta cells to the increased insulin demand during pregnancy, we hypothesized that genetic variants (single nucleotide polymorphisms [SNPs]) in the gene encoding HTR2B could influence the risk of developing GDM.

Optical biosensors based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) are the future of label-free detection methods. This work reports the development of plasmonic thin films, containing Au nanoparticles dispersed in a TiO matrix, as platforms for LSPR biosensors. The present work aims to study the impact of O and N addition on Cr-sputtered coatings on plastic (polycarbonate, PC) used in automobile parts, as a promisor alternative for auto part metallization, while eliminating the usage of toxic hexavalent chromium. Biosorbent materials are effective in the removal of spilled oil from water, but their effect on hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria is not known. Here, we show that corksorb, a cork-based biosorbent, enhances growth and alkane degradation by B4 (Ro) and SK2 (Ab). Ro and Ab degraded 96 ± 1% and 72 ± 2%, respectively, of a mixture of -alkanes (2 g L) in the presence of corksorb.

The poor adhesion and chemical and thermal stability of plasmonic nanostructures deposited on solid surfaces are a hindrance to the longevity and long-term development of robust localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-based systems. In this paper, we have deposited gold (Au) nanolayers with thicknesses above the percolation limit over glass substrates and have used a thermal annealing treatment at a temperature above the substrate's glass transition temperature to promote the dewetting, recrystallization, and thermal embedding of Au nanoparticles (NPs). Due to the partial embedding in glass, the NPs were strongly adherent to the surface of the substrate and were able to resist to the commonly used cleaning procedures and mechanical adhesion tests alike.

Microbial communities with the ability to convert long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) coupled to sulfate reduction can be important in the removal of these compounds from wastewater. In this work, an enrichment culture, able to oxidize the long-chain fatty acid palmitate (C ) coupled to sulfate reduction, was obtained from anaerobic granular sludge.
