Objective: To determine the national and state-level prevalence of endemic goiter associated with iodine deficiency in schoolchildren between 6 and 14 years of age in Brazil, based on data from a national survey carried out from 1994 to 1996.

Materials: Thyroid inspection and palpation were performed on 178,774 schoolchildren between 6 and 14 years of age, in all the states of Brazil. A subsample was selected to measure the iodine content in their urine as well as the iodine content of the table salt used for cooking in their homes.

Three patients (males, black, ages 37, 40 and 57) attended a university clinic with a progressive paraparesis of obscure origin. One patient who referred disease duration of more than 16 years, showed diminished deep reflexes, bilateral Babinski's sign, diminished sensation of vibration, abnormal bladder function and back pain. The other two patients (with one and six years of disease duration) complained of weakness in one leg, increased deep reflexes and back pain.

Fluid flow through ramified structures.

We investigate the fluid flow through two-dimensional ramified structures by direct simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations. We show that for trees with n generations, the flow distribution strongly depends on the Reynolds number Re. Specifically, for a tree without loops the flow becomes highly heterogeneous at high Re.

Emphysema causes a permanent destruction of alveolar walls leading to airspace enlargement, loss of elastic recoil, decrease in surface area for gas exchange, lung hyperexpansion, and increased work of breathing. The most accepted hypothesis of how emphysema develops is based on an imbalance of protease and antiprotease activity leading to the degradation of elastin within the fiber network of the extracellular matrix. Here we report novel roles for mechanical forces and collagen during the remodeling of lung tissue in a rat model of elastase-induced emphysema.

We measured lung impedance in rats in closed chest (CC), open chest (OC), and isolated lungs (IL) at four transpulmonary pressures with a optimal ventilator waveform.
