The current article describes the experiences of a motivated nurse who gained an understanding of pharmacogenomics and advocated for the use cytochrome P450 testing for patients in her clinical practice, her family members, herself, and for changing the health care delivery system to more readily recognize and address drug-metabolizing-enzyme abnormalities. Recommendations for nurses interested in promoting the use of pharmacogenomics include learning as much as possible about testing and implications, networking with other providers, identifying a knowledgeable pharmacist, assessing for a family history of problems with medication side effects or lack of efficacy, and keeping records of relevant medical and medication information to share with providers. Background: Male breast cancer (MBC) is uncommon. As a result, there is limited availability of studies and reviews and even fewer reports from Asia. This is the largest population-based study to compare Chinese MBC patients with female patients during a 10-year period in Hong Kong, Southern China.

Riding other people's coattails: individuals with low self-control value self-control in other people.

Two laboratory experiments and one dyadic study of ongoing relationships of romantic partners examined how temporary and chronic deficits in self-control affect individuals' evaluations of other people. We suggest that when individuals lack self-control resources, they value such resources in other people. Our results support this hypothesis: We found that individuals low (but not high) in self-control use information about other people's self-control abilities when judging them, evaluating other people with high self-control more positively than those with low self-control.

The effect of parental feeding behaviours and participation of children in organized sports/activities on child body mass index.

Purpose: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, we explored the relationship of parental feeding practices and child physical activity levels with measured body mass index (BMI) in a sample of 97 Ontario preschoolers.

Methods: Child weight and height were measured; physical activity and sedentary behaviours were assessed by questionnaire. Preschoolers' parents used the Child Feeding Questionnaire to report their attitudes, concerns, and practices in relation to child feeding.

Geriatric psychiatry education in Canada: the pathway to subspecialty recognition.

Background: This paper outlines the evolution of the training of Canadian physicians and other professionals in the mental health care needs of older adults over the past 2 decades, which has culminated in long-awaited subspecialty recognition by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). Despite the fact that Canada has more than 4000 psychiatrists officially recognized by RCPSC, and a national body of more than 200 members who practice primarily in geriatric psychiatry, the status of geriatric psychiatry as a subspecialty of psychiatry in Canada remained "unofficial" until 2009.

Methods: Early along the pathway toward subspecialization, Canadian educational efforts focused on enhancing the capacity of primary care physicians and other mental health professionals to meet the mental health needs of older adults.

Background: Mutations in the BRCA genes confer greater risk of developing breast, ovarian, and prostate cancer. Families carrying the mutation can have intensive surveillance and take preventative measures. This is the first report on the uptake of such interventions in Chinese mutation carriers residing in Asia.

Event-related potentials in young and elderly adults during a visual spatial working memory task.

The P300 event-related brain potential (ERP) was examined in 14 young (20-29 years of age) and 16 elderly (60-82 years of age) subjects during the performance of a visuospatial memory task requiring recognition of locations. Elderly and young adults exhibited similar recognition accuracy, but recognition reaction times were significantly slower in the elderly. Midline P300 amplitudes recorded in response to visuospatial probe stimuli were significantly attenuated in the elderly, and, depending on the nature of the probe, P300 latency-derived indices indicated that both cognitive and motoric slowness characterized visuospatial recognition in the aged.

Neither stimulus modality nor response mode affected P300 differentiation of young and elderly subjects.
