Diagnostic performance of an automated immunoassay for salivary cortisol.

Automated immunoanalysis (AI) is an interesting alternative for measuring salivary cortisol, as the gold standard HPLC-MS/MS method is not yet readily available. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of salivary cortisol immunoassay on the iSYS immunoanalyzer in adrenal dynamic tests. Cortisol was measured on iSYS and on HPLC-MS/MS in saliva samples collected after 1mg-dexamethasone suppression test (DST) in 115 patients suspected of Cushing syndrome, and during Synacthen® stimulation test (SST) in 108 patients suspected of adrenal insufficiency.

Wicking teaching aged care facilities program: Innovative Practice.

This paper reports on the design of a program that aims to prototype teaching aged care facilities in Australia. Beginning in two Tasmanian residential aged care facilities, the intent of the program is to support large-scale inter-professional student clinical placements, positively influence students' attitudes toward working in aged care and drive development of a high-performance culture capable of supporting evidence-based aged care practice. This is important in the context of aged care being perceived as an unattractive career choice for health professionals, reinforced by negative clinical placement experiences.

Do written mandatory accreditation standards for residential care positively model learning organizations? Textual and critical discourse analysis.

Background: Unprecedented global population ageing accompanied by increasing complexity of aged care present major challenges of quality in aged care. In the business literature, Senge's theory of adaptive learning organisations offers a model of organisational quality. However, while accreditation of national standards is an increasing mechanism for achieving quality in aged care, there are anecdotal concerns it creates a 'minimum standards compliance mentality' and no evidence about whether it reinforces learning organisations.
