Background: Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) are hydrophilic polymers that expand many-fold from their original size after contact with water. Ingestions of "water beads" by young children have been reported to cause bowel obstruction however, the incidence of bowel obstructions is unknown.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study analyzing ingestions reported to our regional poison center from January 1, 2002 to April 25, 2023.

Introduction: There has been a previous case report of peri-arrest muscle rigidity in the setting of severe salicylate poisoning (serum salicylate concentration 1,500 mg/L), described as paratonia or rapid rigor mortis. We present an image of rapid rigor mortis in another fatal salicylate poisoning.

Case Summary: We report a 42-year-old male with severe salicylate poisoning (peak salicylate concentration 1,600 mg/L).

Introduction: Encorafenib and binimetinib, a combination of BRAF and MEK inhibitors, is a standard of care for patients with advanced BRAFV600-mutant melanoma. This combination is known to have gastrointestinal side effects, most of which are mild and managed symptomatically. However, very few studies have reported severe colitis.

This case report summarizes an envenomation by the Mangshan pit viper (Protobothrops mangshanensis), a rare, endangered, venomous snake endemic to Mount Mang of China, and the first reported use of Hemato Polyvalent antivenom (HPAV) for this species. The snakebite occurred in a United States zoo to a 46-year-old male zookeeper. He presented via emergency medical services to a tertiary center after sustaining a single P.

Background: Nutri-score is now widely available in food packages in Europe.

Aim: To study the overall nutritional quality of the diet in relation to risks of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort METHODS: We collected dietary data at baseline from validated food frequency questionnaires. We used a dietary index based on the UK Food Standards Agency modified nutrient profiling system (FSAm-NPS-DI) underlying the Nutri-Score label, to measure the nutritional quality of the diet.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on the severe side effects of BRAF and MEK inhibitors, specifically colitis, in patients with metastatic melanoma, as it's a standard treatment for V600E/K BRAF mutant cases.
  • Researchers analyzed 10 patients hospitalized for colitis after using these drugs, noting common symptoms like diarrhea and abdominal pain, along with severe medical complications, including ulcerations in the right colon.
  • The findings indicate that these medications can lead to serious gastrointestinal issues, with a significant number of patients having to discontinue treatment or requiring surgery, highlighting the need for careful monitoring.

Background & Aims: The low-phospholipid-associated cholelithiasis (LPAC) syndrome is a recently described peculiar form of cholelithiasis associated with the ATP-binding-cassette subfamily B, member 4 () gene deficiency. The purpose of our study was to analyse the relationship between magnetic resonance (MR) features and the genetic status of in people with LPAC syndrome.

Methods: A total of 233 individuals with proven LPAC syndrome were enrolled between January 2003 and June 2018 in a retrospective single-centre study.

Background & Aims: Industrial foods have been associated with increased risks of several chronic conditions. We investigated the relationship between the degree of food processing and risks of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort.

Methods: Analyses included 413,590 participants (68.

Background: Use of a combination of targeted therapies (COMBIO) in patients with refractory/overlapping immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) has increased, but reported data remain scarce. We aimed to assess effectiveness and safety of COMBIO in patients with IMIDs.

Methods: We conducted a French ambispective multicenter cohort study from September 2020 to May 2021, including adults' patients with 1 or 2 IMIDs and treated at least 3-month with COMBIO.

Background And Aims: We aimed to investigate the association between protein intake and risk of inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition.

Methods: A total of 413 593 participants from eight European countries were included. Dietary data were collected at baseline from validated food frequency questionnaires.

Background: Ustekinumab and vedolizumab are commonly used after anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF) failure in patients with Crohn's disease (CD). No randomised controlled trial has compared these drugs.

Aims: To compare the effectiveness of ustekinumab and vedolizumab in CD patients refractory to anti-TNF.

Iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia are common medical conditions. Management of the etiology and iron supplementation are both necessary to treat this condition. Use of intravenous iron preparations is increasing due to its advantages over oral iron.

Background & Aims: Low-phospholipid-associated cholelithiasis (LPAC) syndrome, a rare genetic form of intrahepatic cholelithiasis in adults, is still poorly understood. We report the results of the largest-ever case-control study of patients with LPAC syndrome aiming to assess the prevalence, clinical features, and comorbidities of the disease.

Methods: We included all LPAC cases diagnosed between 2001 and 2016 in 11 French centres.

Background: The risk of lymphoma in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treated with anti-TNF agents remains unclear.

Aim: To assess the comparative risk of lymphoma with anti-TNF agents and/or thiopurines in IBD METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library to identify studies that evaluated lymphoproliferative disorders associated with anti-TNF agents with or without thiopurines. The risk of lymphoma was assessed through four comparator groups: combination therapy (anti-TNF plus thiopurine), anti-TNF monotherapy, thiopurine monotherapy and control group.

Background: While () is the major cause of gastric cancer, it has also been suggested to be involved in colorectal cancer development. However, prospective studies addressing and colorectal cancer are sparse and inconclusive. We assessed the association of antibody responses to proteins with colorectal cancer in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort.

Background: Acute severe ulcerative colitis (ASUC) is a life-threatening condition. Mortality in ASUC decreased in published series but there is uncertainty as to whether this also applies to the real-life setting.

Aim: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of mortality in ASUC in studies from referral centres and in population-based studies, separately and combined.

Background And Aims: The ABCC2 gene is implicated in Dubin-Johnson syndrome (DJS), a rare autosomal recessive liver disorder. The primary aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic value of ABCC2 genetic testing in the largest cohort of DJS reported to date. The high number of patients with cholestatic manifestations in this series prompted us to evaluate the genetic contribution of rare, potentially pathogenic ABCC2 variants to other inherited cholestatic disorders.

Control of virus replication in HIV-1 infection is critical to delaying disease progression. While cellular immune responses are a key determinant of control, relatively little is known about the contribution of the infecting virus to this process. To gain insight into this interplay between virus and host in viral control, we conducted a detailed analysis of two heterosexual HIV-1 subtype A transmission pairs in which female recipients sharing three HLA class I alleles exhibited contrasting clinical outcomes: R880F controlled virus replication while R463F experienced high viral loads and rapid disease progression.
