Introduction: Individuals with chronic physical illness are at increased risk of negative psychological sequelae. Immersive virtual reality (VR) is an emerging treatment that might reduce these negative effects and increase quality of life in individuals with chronic physical illness.
Objective: To systematically review literature examining the use of immersive VR in adult populations with chronic physical illness to understand: (1) how immersive VR is used to improve psychological well-being of adults with chronic physical illness (2) what effect this immersive VR has on the psychological well-being of adults with chronic physical illness.
Objectives: A dose of 5 mg/kg lidocaine is considered appropriate for paediatric airway topicalisation. Existing literature suggests that younger children are susceptible to toxic lidocaine plasma levels and achieve this at a faster rate.
Main Outcome Measures: The primary outcome of this study was to ascertain peak plasma lidocaine levels after topicalisation for airway endoscopy.
Background: Laryngeal trauma in pediatrics is extremely rare; however, because of the smaller pediatric larynx, it can have catastrophic consequences. Following laryngeal trauma, surgical emphysema is a relatively common presentation. In pediatrics, it can be a life-threatening condition.

The ability of these bacteria to directly sense and respond to changes in local oxygen availability is in part consequent upon expression of the 2-oxoglutarate oxygenase, prolyl hydroxylase (PPHD), which acts on elongation factor Tu (EF-Tu), and is homologous with the human hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) prolyl hydroxylases. We report that PPHD expression regulates the neutrophil response to acute pseudomonal infection.

Methods: Thirty-two patients chronically infected with P aeruginosa were recruited in this double-blind cross-over randomized controlled trial. Sixteen patients were recruited in each arm, were given atorvastatin 80 mg or placebo for 3 months followed by a washout period for 6 weeks, and then crossed over and administered the alternative therapy for 3 months.
Objectives: Thousands of head-injured children are cared for by interprofessional teams in emergency departments every day. Teams must balance performing time-consuming interventions with safe transport for neuroimaging. This study aims to describe and compare providers' perspectives on the transfer of head-injured children to neuroimaging and factors contributing to delays.

Such exacerbations are treated with antibiotics, which generally lead to an improvement in lung function and reduced sputum P. aeruginosa density.

We have termed this tool a Field Assessment Conditioning Tool (FACT). The FACT draws on quantitative data including clinical care points in addition to self-reflective qualitative data.

We set out to determine if pure allicin and aqueous garlic extracts (AGE) exhibit antimicrobial properties against the Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc), the major bacterial phytopathogen for alliums and an intrinsically multiresistant and life-threatening human pathogen. We prepared an AGE from commercial garlic bulbs and used HPLC to quantify the amount of allicin therein using an aqueous allicin standard (AAS).

Pathogenesis is poorly understood, but excess neutrophilic airway inflammation is seen. Accumulating evidence suggests that statins have pleiotropic effects; therefore, these drugs could be a potential anti-inflammatory treatment for patients with bronchiectasis.

MBL deficiency is common (10-30% of the general population depending on the definition used) and has been associated with disease progression in cystic fibrosis. We aimed to assess the effect of MBL deficiency on disease severity in non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.

A new paradigm for managing such infections is needed, as are relevant and translatable animal models to identify and test concepts. We sought to improve on limitations associated with existing models of infection in small animals through developing a lung segmental model of chronic Pseudomonas infection in sheep.

This may be because of wide variations in age, weight, dosing ranges, and off-label practices, but few studies exclusively devoted to examining pediatric 10-fold error have identified the circumstances and mechanisms that lead to such errors. We examined all 10-fold medication errors reported within an academic, university-affiliated pediatric hospital to make recommendations for future initiatives that could improve medication safety in pediatric practice.

We report an adult with CF who developed Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteraemia during an episode of acute appendicitis. The Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from the blood culture was confirmed by molecular typing to be the same transmissible strain responsible for the patient's chronic pulmonary infection.

Advances in diagnosis, surgery, perfusion and anesthesia in the developed world have had dramatic results on children's lives, and many forms of CHD can now be safely corrected or palliated. However, in developing countries, for the children who receive cardiac surgery, perioperative mortality and morbidity remain high.

Rationale: Bronchiectasis is a chronic debilitating disease with few evidence-based long-term treatments.
Objectives: A randomized controlled trial assessing the efficacy of nebulized gentamicin therapy over 1 year in patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.
Methods: Sixty-five patients were randomized to either twice-daily nebulized gentamicin, 80 mg, or nebulized 0.
This study aimed to establish whether the bacterial density of spontaneous sputum is affected by the time and mode of sample storage. Ten patients with bronchiectasis collected all sputum expectorated over 45 min. The samples were aliquoted and processed at 25 degrees C for qualitative and quantitative bacteriology at 1, 2, 4 and 6 h from expectoration.

Methods: We reviewed strain and genomovar typing of all available Burkholderia isolates at our centre between 1983-2006.
Results: The incidence/prevalence of infection with Burkholderia species between 1983-1990 was below 5%/9% each year.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the pathogen most commonly associated with morbidity and mortality in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. The host-pathogen interactions responsible for progressive CF lung diseases are complex. However, there is growing interest in the role of hypermutable P.

We have performed a 4-year prospective surveillance for Pseudomonas aeruginosa cross-infection at a large regional adult cystic fibrosis center. Despite purpose-built facilities in a new building and the practice of strict hygiene, P. aeruginosa cross-infection has continued.
