While sex differences in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been identified in areas such as neurocognitive functioning, behavior patterns, and diagnostic criteria, less work has focused on differences within females referred for ASD evaluation, including those who did not go on to receive a diagnosis. This study examined psychological and behavioral characteristics and co-occurring and differential DSM-5 diagnoses between pediatric female participants who received an ASD diagnosis (ASD+) and those who did not (ASD-). Data on cognitive functioning, adaptive functioning, internalizing symptoms, externalizing symptoms, and ADOS-2 scores were analyzed among 137 3- to 20-year-old patients.

We retrospectively evaluated how accurately preoperative imaging localizes parathyroid adenoma in superior versus inferior parathyroids. Over 6 years, 104 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism underwent parathyroid surgery in a single centre. Of these, 103 underwent ultrasound, 97 [Tc]pertechnetate/MIBI SPECT/CT and 30 [F]fluorocholine (FCH) PET/CT.

Biofilm formation is an adaptive resistance mechanism that pathogens employ to survive in the presence of antimicrobials. is an infectious Gram-negative bacterium whose biofilm allows it to withstand antimicrobial attack and threaten human health. Chronic wound healing is often impeded by infections and the associated biofilms.

The objective of this study was to retrospectively evaluate preoperative imaging modalities for localization of parathyroid adenomas with a view to enable minimally invasive parathyroidectomy and in particular, to consider the contribution of F-fluorocholine-PET/CT. 104 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism, who underwent parathyroid surgery in a single centre during a 6-year period were included. Of these, 103 underwent ultrasound, 97 Tc-Pertechnetate/SestaMIBI-SPECT, 20 MRI and 30 F-fluorocholine-PET/CT.

Telehealth is a promising modality for Part C early intervention (EI), services typically implemented face-to-face in home and community settings. Barriers to telehealth in EI reported prior to COVID-19 included lack of training and access to reliable internet. The abrupt telehealth shift at the onset of the pandemic did not permit a phased adoption approach.

Article Synopsis
  • Early detection of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is crucial for accessing effective services that enhance child development, yet many children are diagnosed later than recommended.
  • A study evaluated the impact of a training workshop for Part C Early Intervention providers on using the Screening Tool for Autism in Toddlers, resulting in increased provider knowledge and approximately 45% using the tool with families 18 months later.
  • The findings indicate that while the screening tool is practical for Early Intervention settings, it may be more effective if certain providers are designated as screening "point-persons," and further research is needed on the traits of agencies or providers best equipped to use the tool.

Family-centered care represents a collaborative partnership between caregivers and service providers, and is associated with positive caregiver and child outcomes. This approach may be especially important for caregivers with early concerns about autism, as service providers are often the gateway to appropriately-specialized intervention. Perceptions of family-centered care received from primary care providers (PCPs) and Part C Early Intervention (EI) providers were rated by two groups of caregivers: those concerned about autism (n = 37) and those concerned about another developmental problem (n = 22), using the Measure of Processes of Care (MPOC-20).

Robust findings demonstrate that parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience high levels of parenting stress that are associated with negative outcomes for families. Although the majority of research on parenting stress has focused on parents of children with an existing diagnosis, parents of young children with concerns about ASD-related behaviors also face many unique challenges before the time of diagnosis. However, no study to date has examined patterns of parenting stress among parents of children with ASD concerns prior to a formal ASD diagnosis.

Our aim was to evaluate the long-term objective and subjective results of a modified expansion sphincter pharyngoplasty (ESP) technique in patients with sleep-disordered breathing. Single center prospective study of 35 patients underwent an ESP as a primary surgical treatment between June 2012 and September 2015 at the hospital AZ Sint-Jan Bruges-Ostend. Patients were divided into non-OSAS and OSAS (AHI >5).

Background: Children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often present with social difficulties, though the extent to which these clearly overlap with symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is not well understood.

Methods: We explored parent-reported and directly-observed ASD symptoms on the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) and the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) in children referred to ASD-specialty clinics who received diagnoses of either ADHD (n = 48) or ASD (n = 164).

Results: Of the ADHD sample, 21 % met ASD cut-offs on the ADOS and 30 % met ASD cut-offs on all domains of the ADI-R.

Background: Maxillary sinus puncture is considered the gold standard for diagnosing acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis (ABMS) and for identifying bacterial pathogens in antimicrobial trials of ABMS. However, sinus puncture and aspiration is all invasive, time-consuming procedure that is limited by discomfort to the patient and possible complications. Therefore, the diagnostic usefulness in clinical practice and patient enrollment in studies of ABMS is hindered and alternatives for maxillary sinus puncture are being investigated.

Botulinum injection in the cricopharyngeal muscle has not yet been described thoroughly. In reviewing the literature, only 24 cases were found in which botulinum injection was used to treat cricopharyngeal dysfunction. We want to add another four cases and discuss specific indications and necessary pre-treatment examinations.
