Background: National Action Plans (NAPs) aim to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) understanding and awareness but struggle to translate targets into clinically relevant guidance for general practice.

Objective: To identify and map antibiotic use targets in European general practice and explore if and how these targets are linked to NAPs.

Methods: A systematic search was carried out in MEDLINE (OVID), EMBASE and SCOPUS, with additional manual searches.

Background: Neurocognitive disorders (NCDs), including delirium, cognitive impairment, or dementia are prevalent in up to 39% of older adults in acute care, particularly older trauma patients. Undiagnosed NCDs result in poor outcomes, such as increased incidence of depressive symptoms, longer length of stay, and mortality.

Objective: This study aims to identify the diagnostic test accuracy of screening tools for the detection of NCDs in older trauma patients in acute settings.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates hip and groin pain in Gaelic games players, focusing on both male and female athletes, as older research primarily centered on elite males.
  • A survey involving 775 players revealed a 54.8% prevalence of hip and groin pain, with many continuing to play, despite 33.5% experiencing recurrent pain.
  • Key findings suggest that male athletes and those participating in multiple sports are more prone to hip and groin issues, while Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome (FAIS) is relatively rare in this population.

Article Synopsis
  • Healthy ageing is important for older people and can be helped by how society supports them, but this support can sometimes be lacking.
  • The TILDA project studies how to promote healthy ageing and finds out what older people and their support groups think about its efforts.
  • Interviews with 15 organizations showed some limitations of TILDA, like not being inclusive enough, but also highlighted its benefits, like providing useful information to help plan for the needs of older people in the future.

Introduction: The complex neurological disorder of migraine is prevalent (19%) and burdensome in university students. Qualitative research exploring the lived experience of migraine in students has yet to be conducted.

Methods: Students clinically diagnosed with migraine were recruited (purposive sampling) from a sample of Irish third-level institutions for a one-time anonymized Zoom focus group or individual interview.

Background: The EXOFFIT study compared the effectiveness of three time-matched exercise interventions in women with obesity for improving cardiorespiratory fitness. To best inform future research, evaluation of the interventions' acceptability is needed. Previous research has been inconsistent with methods and reporting of acceptability.

Objectives: Prognostic models have the potential to aid clinical decision-making after hip fracture. This systematic review aimed to identify, critically appraise, and summarize multivariable prediction models for mortality or other long-term recovery outcomes occurring at least 30 days after hip fracture.

Study Design And Setting: MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and CINAHL databases were searched up to May 2023.

Introduction: There is a substantial and progressive association between chronic pain (CP) and living with overweight or obesity. The relationship between obesity and CP is intricate and complex, with obesity being associated with increased pain-related disability, pain intensity, reduction in physical functioning and poorer psychological well-being. A Qualitative Evidence Synthesis (QES) provides an opportunity to better understand and reveal key areas within the patient experience of these complex interactions to inform best practice and future intervention design.

Background: CARA set out to develop a data-visualisation platform to facilitate general practitioners to develop a deeper understanding of their patient population, disease management and prescribing through dashboards. To support the continued use and sustainability of the CARA dashboards, dashboard performance and user engagement have to be optimised. User research places people at the centre of the design process and aims to evaluate the needs, behaviours and attitudes of users to inform the design, development and impact of a product.

Background: Lifestyle changes, in addition to preventive medications, optimise stroke secondary prevention. Evidence from systematic reviews support behaviour-change interventions post-stroke to address lifestyle-related risk. However, understanding of the theory-driven mediators that affect behaviour-change post-stroke is lacking.

Background: Improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) have been shown to largely attenuate the negative health risks associated with obesity. To date, literature on women with obesity has focused upon the evaluation of aerobic-based exercise interventions. Hence, there is a need to evaluate resistance and combined interventions with this cohort.

Introduction: Respiratory disorders are the most common cause of death in Parkinson's Disease (PD). Conflicting data exist on the aetiology of respiratory dysfunction in PD and few studies examine the effects of exercise-based interventions on respiratory measures. This study was conducted to better understand respiratory dysfunction in PD and to identify measures of dysfunction responsive to an integrative exercise programme.

Background: Chronic pain is associated with substantial personal suffering and societal costs and is a growing healthcare concern worldwide. While chronic pain has been extensively studied in adults, limited data exists on its prevalence and impact in adolescents. Understanding the prevalence and impact of chronic pain and pain beliefs in adolescents is crucial for developing effective prevention and treatment strategies.

Established in 2006, the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) investigates the health, economic and social circumstances of a nationally-representative sample of people aged fifty years and older in a series of biennial data collection waves. Irish newspapers have been reporting the results of TILDA for over a decade and a half, and their texts represent reports of scientific research distilled through the pen of journalists. In their totality, their texts constitute a public discourse on ageing and health.

Purpose: Rehabilitation outcomes are important for patients, professionals and policy makers. Most outcome measures (OMs) were developed for "Western" contexts and may be inadequate for low-resource and conflict settings, where the ability to demonstrate impact would be critical to strengthening the sector. This study aims to understand perspectives of physiotherapists from challenging environments regarding current practices, value, barriers, and facilitators of measuring rehabilitation outcomes.

Background: To manage injuries effectively, players, head coaches, and medical personnel need to have excellent knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours in relation to the identification of risk factors for injuries, the implementation of injury prevention initiatives, as well as the implementation of effective injury management strategies. Understanding the injury context, whereby specific personal, environmental, and societal factors can influence the implementation of injury prevention initiatives and injury management strategies is critical to player welfare. To date, no qualitative research investigating the context of injuries, has been undertaken in elite-level women's football.

Introduction: Optimised secondary prevention strategies that include lifestyle change are recommended after stroke. While multiple systematic reviews (SRs) address behaviour change interventions, intervention definitions, and associated outcomes differ between reviews. This overview of reviews addresses the pressing need to synthesise high-level evidence for lifestyle-based behavioural and/or self-management interventions to reduce risk in stroke secondary prevention in a structured, consistent way.

Unlabelled: This review aimed to describe the methods and results from recent Irish research about post-acute hip fracture outcomes. Meta-analyses estimate the 30-day and 1-year mortality rate at 5% and 24% respectively. There is a need for standardised recommendations about which data should be recorded to aid national and international comparisons.

Article Synopsis
  • * A systematic review analyzed ten studies, discovering that while seven showed a slight decrease in antibiotic prescribing, the reduction occurred mainly when dashboards were paired with educational and behavioral strategies.
  • * None of the included studies focused on the development or testing of the dashboards with stakeholder input, indicating a gap in research on the practical implementation of these tools.

Premature cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality among men represents a public health concern worldwide. In Ireland, male farmers are a 'high-risk' group for CVD mortality compared to normative values for Irish males. Despite this, they are perceived to be a 'hard-to-reach' (HTR) group to engage with health interventions.
