Introduction: Asymmetric electromyographic (EMG) activity during teeth clenching has been linked to cognitive impairment, as evaluated by the Spinnler-Tognoni matrices test, and to asymmetric pupil size (anisocoria). Anisocoria indicates an asymmetric Locus Coeruleus activity, leading to an asymmetric hemispheric excitability worsening cognitive performance. Bite splint wearing corrects EMG asymmetry, reduces anisocoria and improves cognitive performance.

In this study, a new methodology for designing and creating a custom-made template for maxillofacial surgery has been developed. The custom-made template can be used both for cutting and repositioning of the mandible arches for executing a BSSO (bilateral sagittal split osteotomy) treatment. The idea was developed in order to give the possibility of using a custom-made template with standard plates, thus reducing long times, high costs and low availability of custom-made plates; this represents the proof of novelty of the proposed template, based on a well-established methodology.

This study introduces the weighted linear prediction adapted to high-pitched singing voices (WLP-HPSV) method for accurately estimating formant frequencies of vowels sung by lyric sopranos. The WLP-HPSV method employs a variant of the WLP analysis combined with the zero-frequency filtering (ZFF) technique to address specific challenges in formant estimation from singing signals. Evaluation of the WLP-HPSV method compared to the LPC method demonstrated its superior performance in accurately capturing the spectral characteristics of synthetic /u/ vowels and the /a/ and /u/ natural singing vowels.

Chewing improves visuospatial performance through locus coeruleus (LC) activation. The effects of bilateral and unilateral mastication were investigated in subjects showing different degrees of asymmetry in masseter electromyographic (EMG) activity during clenching and in pupil size at rest (anisocoria), which is a proxy of LC imbalance. Correlations between performance changes and asymmetry values were found in males, but not in females.

Trigeminal input exerts acute and chronic effects on the brain, modulating cognitive functions. Here, new data from humans and animals suggest that these effects are caused by trigeminal influences on the Locus Coeruleus (LC). The novel stochastic model to produce voiced sounds proposed in this paper uses the source-filter Fant theory to generate voice signals and, consequently, it does not consider the coupling between the vocal tract and the vocal folds. Two novelties are proposed in the paper. The first one is the new model obtained from the unification of two other deterministic one mass-spring-damper models obtained from the literature and the second one is to build a stochastic model which can generate and control the level of jitter resulting even in hoarse voice signals or with pathological characteristics but using a simpler model than those ones discussed in the literature.
